An Air Force investigation into alleged drug use in the ranks has expanded to include 10 officers at six bases in the U.S. and Britain.

Nine lieutenants and one captain are being investigated for illegal possession of recreational drugs, Air Force spokesman Lt. Col. Brett Ashworth said Friday. The case began with the investigation of two officers at Edwards Air Force Base in California and quickly widened to several other bases because of the airmen's contacts with others about drug possession, he said.

When I served in the US Army in Germany in 1969-70 it was known that our Company CO, a Captain that had serve in Vietnam, was lax about marijuana. Some claimed they had smoked with him.

When I got out, back home my wife worked with a woman who’s husband had been an infantry officer in Vietnam combat. He said they smoked a lot over there. He smoked it a lot back home.

I’m not surprised that a few officers today use this substance. It is being decriminalized, even legalized now.

Fort Hood was flooded with drugs back in the 1990s. I think about half of my basic training platoon that got sent there ended up chaptered out or awol in lieu of UCMJ action after drug charges. My room mate was a NARC for the CID. He went AWOL when he realized he was still going to jail despite narcing for them. I got all his gear. gotta LOL about that.

The late 90's was a pretty good time in civilian employment, so the quality of enlistments went down. My squadron had a about a 25% failure rate in first term enlistments. Mostly drugs, some criminal behavior.

No excuse for officers to be doing drugs, kick them out and recoup an appropriate cost for any education they got on the government dime.

I retired from the Air Force in 1988. I am not sure if things have changed much. I seem to recall people getting popped for drugs, on a semi regular basis, almost my entire career.

“Insidious creep of drugs into even our most beloved institutions.”

This is nothing new. When I was on active duty in the late 60’s and 70’s, recreational drug use on the bases where I was stationed was commonplace and reflected the casual use of drugs in the population in general for that era. Officers and enlisted both smoked pot, dropped pills and did some harder stuff from time to time, including hospital staff where I was assigned. Doctors, nurses, medical techs used drugs. On the flight line, pilots, mechanics, etc. too. Military police squadron parties were notorious for their drug use. I’m not saying everybody used drugs but it was not uncommon.

So this is not an insidious creep. This has been around for a long time. Drug use in Vietnam during that era was heavy. The military always reflects the culture that the personnel in it come from.

Whew! They were only doing drugs? If it were reading Bibles, they’d be in big trouble.

I remember 69-77 many unit Commanders acted as if they preferred dopeheads to juice freaks. The line of thought being they could find the dope head if they needed him— and they could see a different level of performance -under the influence— and juice freaks tended to enjoy getting drunk and getting in fights with whoever was closest to them. Many multiple tour unit Commanders seemed to think it “Micky Mouse:”to interfere with whatever their men did when they were not on line. I don’t know how many Medical Officers I saw reporting under the influence of either drugs or alcohol— or both— and I saw the outrage whenever a Commander decided to crack down on the crap.My point is there is nothing new under the sun.My fear is that this investigation may be related to the Obama purge. And that the Officers and Men that do reflect his Failed Administration —who do sex and drugs and other immoral act because Obama is seen as promoting such —will now be penalized for reflecting their CINC.

There is a high number of gays who use drugs, I would be interested in knowing what percent of these 12 are gay.
