Duckhorn files lawsuit over Duck Dynasty wines

Duckhorn Wine Company has a history of going after wineries that dare to use a duck in their names or labels.

But this time, the winery is hunting a potentially tougher target: the self-professed “redneck royalty” of the hit A&E TV show “Duck Dynasty.”

The Napa Valley winery is going after the Duck Dynasty folks because they’ve used the word “Duck” and an image of a duck on their wines.

That’s right: the reality TV stars with the motto “Faith, Family and Facial Hair” who made their fortune selling duck hunting gear have launched a wine brand, called “Duck Commander.”

In November, the Robertson family of Duck Dynasty fame collaborated with Trinchero Family Estates to produce three wines from California grapes: Triple Threat red blend, Wood Duck chardonnay and Miss Priss pink moscato.

Did he really try to sue Spike TV? When I think of that action flick station, Spike Lee’s contrived and tedious racist fables are not what comes to mind. He is lucky the estate of the goofy 1950’s entertainer Spike Jones have not tried to sue him, for putting a stain on the name.

"the goofy 1950’s entertainer Spike Jones"

An apt description. I think I also remember the Spike Lee lawsuit.

That sounds awful insecure of Duckhorn, who boasts an upscale product. This isn’t drugstore wine?

A salute to the redneck craze would probably be a fitting answer. “Duckhorn Redneck” and the label duck would be wearing a camo bonnet or something humorous like that.

The Duck Commander brand has common sense on its side in this case, not to mention superior trademark legal representation. The Robertsons have advanced the “duck” image a lot further in three years than the Duckhorns have in their 37 years of grape pressing. A rising tide lifts all boats, and the Californians ought to be grateful for the heightened recognition.

You can copyright a duck?

Probably not, but no doubt they get their lawyers to bullyrag any startup that uses a duck in its branding. Most will be cowed into giving in, not wanting the expense of a legal battle.

What a pathetic, brain dead lawsuit. These goofballs can’t make it so that no one else can put a duck on their wine bottles. Hopefully this one gets laughed out of court and that have to pay for the DD boys lawyers fees.

“Several years ago I was given several bottles of Duckhorn wine ... wasn’t impressed.”

Not me. I was impressed. When you shoot those bottles, there’s a unique “ping” to the explosion.

Not because they used the word, “duck”. Because they think they see a big payday by going after the Robertson because they’re loaded now

Like if Duckhorn came up with a variety they called Duckhorn Redneck.

Foghorn Leghorn might, I say, might, have something to say about that.

Nah. The guy who gave it to us hated it too but I did get a swig of it before placing it for target practice.

If I were the judge, I’d throw these “Duckhorn” people in jail until they lighten up. I wonder if they are homosexuals. Ducks and the word duck are not copyrighted. Now, back in the 70s, I used to drink a lot of BUCKHORN beer. If the owners are still around, I see a potential lawsuit against these winos at Duckhorn.

Imo, Duckhorn could care less about winning the lawsuit. They are interested in the free advertisement for their product. The longer the lawsuit goes on, the more free advertisement they will receive for their product.
