It started before that; Hillary was beating him in primaries (where votes are counted) so they gave him the caucuses (where “enthusiasm” is counted). Hillary supporters sucked it up and voted for him anyway...

That got him the nomination. What got him the election was the fact that he ran against two bad moderate Republican candidates instead of two conservative candidates.

McCain and Romney ran their campaigns no differently than if they were secretly working to get Obama elected without being too obvious about it.
