It started before that; Hillary was beating him in primaries (where votes are counted) so they gave him the caucuses (where “enthusiasm” is counted). Hillary supporters sucked it up and voted for him anyway...

What got him the election was the fact that he ran against two bad moderate Republican candidates instead of two conservative candidates.
