Quinn and Rose are off the air, (temporarily, I hope!) Gone, but DEFINITELY not forgotten! Meanwhile, our friendly group of dedicated FReeper Q&R fans will meet in our usual spot - same time, same station - as we always have! So grab your coffee - or whatever you choose to start your day - and drop in for some political chit-chat, or just to shoot the breeze! We are all coming from - or going to - work, but we all stop in to say hi! Feel free to join us!
Morning FRiends!
I bid you good night! Mine will be melatonin induced!
goodnight karatemom! I’m off to bed too, as soon as the dog decides he wants in!
Been thinking more about Quinn and his tweets, especially him saying they are looking at a few options.
There are only a couple of talkers in Pittsburgh now, basically KDKA and KQV. I can't see him going to either. KD is happy with their stupid morning show and KQV doesn't have a good signal.
There are a couple of outlying stations - WBVP for one - but that would require a format change and again their coverage isn't good.
There is some talk about Salem. They have been adjusting formats and building in other markets. That might be a possibility. Still a ways off and kind of far fetched as well.
Even though there are things changing at my stations I can't see Q&R fitting in here. Our FM is geared to Soft Pop - women...VERY little talk or news. Our AM is an oldies station and all nostalgia music. Both these stations have been cash cows for our company nationwide so there is no way they would change. Plus the owner does not like controversy.
That leaves internet or Sirius/XM. I am just not that knowledgeable about what it takes to do Sirius/XM so I can't comment.
INternet is another thing. They could start that up on the cheap and possibly get local and national advertising. They would be taking a big hit on salary. Because Jim knows the business he could probably pull together enough advertisers to get it off the ground.
A radio legend that left our stations did something similar. He brokered a deal with a station in Canonsburg then pulled together his own advertising. He had begged me to go with him but I needed more stability.
He did a great morning show but he could only keep it going for less than a year.
If Q&R would try the internet plan it might be cheap enough to keep it going and build an advertising base. One of the BIG problems though would be in car listening. It would have to be podcast. Not sure that would be viable.
Just thinking out loud.
Good morning n’@ everyone!
Thank you for your radio insight P6. I have t checked twitter yet this am (FR is my 1st stop ea morning) so I don’t know if he’s tweeting. Just a thought I’d like to toss in...instead of an am drive time talk show...what about a 9 to midnight? I have no idea of what is syndicated out there at night, but if going internet or satellite would that hit the target audience better?
Quinn DID tweet, about 1/2 hr ago. Topical stuff...John Kerry being Iran’s B/tch; the controversy of whiny LIBS over Lone Survivor. He tweeted at Bret Baier (and his own daughter). Quinn’s ID @warroom
Now I feel oddly stalkeresque...if any of yinz sign up for Twitter, lmk...I’ll FRMail you my info to find me.
Most of the morning guys I’ve worked with refuse to do other dayparts. Once they get that shift that’s all they want. Jim might be different but then again he is old school radio. It might make a difference if it’s internet.
A grunt like me does any daypart but each daypart requires a different set of skills. Once you focus on one set and master it you don’t like to change. Not that you can’t change.
It’s kind of like a 1st baseman. You might play other positons but if you are really good where you are you want to stay there.
Then you have utility players who can play many positions well but are masters of none. That is kind of the way I am, lol!
I’ll check later today to see if I’m on twitter. Well I AM... I just get frustrated easily....like typing on this tablet.....aarrraaauuuggghhh!
FReepmail me your info and I’ll try later this afternoon.
I listen to KDKA while driving and it has to be the worse.
Mike Pintech spent 9 hrs talking about legalizing pot.
The average age of a KDKA listener is about 75.
He didn’t give a hoot about WMNY. Ended up giving it to Loran Mann and his church.
Also Levin and the other programming was bartered so it didn’t cost us much.
