Let's Not Kid Ourselves About Marijuana
Wall Street Journal ^ | January 15. 2014 | MITCHELL S. ROSENTHAL

Let's Not Kid Ourselves About Marijuana Adolescents are vulnerable—and not just to pot. That's how they are programmed. They make rash and risky choices because their brains aren't fully developed. The part of the brain that censors dumb or dangerous behavior is last to come on line (generally not before the mid-20s). Meanwhile, the brain's pleasure-seeking structures are up and running strong by puberty.

When you link adolescent pleasure-seeking and risk-taking to marijuana's impairment of perception and judgment, it isn't surprising that a 2004 study of seriously injured drivers in Maryland found half the teens tested positive for pot.

I have always found the opposite to be true. Alkies never are the same again.

bump

A cousin of someone I know takes pills by the handful, he smokes whatever he can get his hands on, drinks, drives home with his kids in the car.

Even when he is sober, he ain’t normal.

Maybe maybe not. That is just speculation.

Yes? Do you have something objective and substantive to offer?

“Alcohol addiction is bad but I haven’t seen many with fried brains after they quit.”

Plenty of irreversibly fried brains because of alcohol. Ever heard of wet brain?

This is on top of liver damage, stomach disease, nerve damage, and muscle atrophy to name just a few complications brought on by alcoholism.

None of which is associated with cannabis use.

You won’t convince me without something substantive or objective. Opinions that run counter to all of my anecdotal experience won’t cut it.

I haven’t seen it do anything significant to anyone so I don’t know what about that would convince me it’s terrible. I’m not sure how you can claim to have seen long term effects in those “high school burnouts” and “concert goers” either.

Look at what happened to violent crime in CA since it legalized medical pot in 1996. The murder rate has been pert near cut in half!

I am 59, one good friend of mine is 65 and another is 70. Is that long enough? I could name dozens more who are mere acquaintances. I don’t know any burnouts or unaccomplished people for that matter.
