Not necessarily. People were more polite when they knew that calling someone a racist (or saying a man’s black wife is a white man’s ho) might cost them their life.
I think the idea of defending your wife’s honor by killing the bastard who insulted her in a duel would be a step up from just allowing this kind of coarse discourse to go on unchallenged.
I say we bring back flintlocks. Most duels in the past ended up with either nobody being hit or a spectator being shot and the dueling parties just going out for a beer afterwards.
