Road rage on Interstate 80/94 blamed for shooting 14 hours ago • Elvia Malagon elvia.malagon@nwi.com, (219) 933-3246

GARY | Police were searching Wednesday for a driver who shot a Valparaiso man during a road rage incident on I-80/94.

The 48-year-old shooting victim was heading home from work at 4 p.m. when he merged onto Interstate 80/94 from Cline Avenue, police said. He cut off another driver as he was getting onto the eastbound lanes of I-80/94.

He kept driving and soon noticed the man he had cut off was driving alongside him. He said the other driver rolled down his window and began yelling at him.

The Valparaiso man started driving faster to avoid the man. He told police he saw the angry man was catching up to him and then heard a loud bang.

The Valparaiso man's red 1999 Dodge Ram pickup truck's rear window shattered. He then realized he had been shot in his upper back, Indiana State Police said.

Wow. That is a nice shot... Left handed, one handed, from a moving vehicle, through glass, and still hit the guy. No wonder the victim is still scared; probably wishes he hadn’t cut they guy off.

I really wonder how both guys voted.

Standard rule I was always taught is if you are merging onto the interstate, you slow just a little to look for a break in the traffic, then merge and speed up.

If you are on the interstate in the RIGHT hand lane you always watch for merging traffic. If you see it, you move to the LEFT LANE to allow the other driver to merge.

No one seems to follow these rules. They seem to try to hit mergers, and refuse to move to the left lane.

It was Christie’s fault for causing a traffic jam in one town in Northern New Jersey. That Bastard!

Well, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for a “middle-aged man with short hair”.

Can’t be many of those in IL.

90% of drivers no longer know how to merge.

My commute includes 20 minutes on I-95. I average 75-80 but if I see a type-A drive I give them a wider berth. Don't need the drama, my work day is stressful enough.

My ex-father in law believed that people should not merge and should wait for you to pass. Dead serious. I couldn’t believe it when I was in the car with him and he put it into action.

Another car was coming down the on ramp to merge in in front of us. My father in law floored it in the right lane to cut the guy off. I was dumbfounded.

Like many leftist lunatics, he honestly thought he was morally right and, even more comically, thought the other guy was morally wrong for trying to merge.

Good KL...Al's law No. 3 :...Never respond to a crazy/angry person.

A friend in high school had a difficult time learning to drive. He was a good guy but often forgot to signal before changing lanes or didn't judge the speed of on coming traffic before pulling out, things like that.

So, often drivers would get angry, get beside him, daring him to pull over. he tried to motion apology to say he was sorry but that made them angrier.

So one day he hit on the idea to ignore them, just drive along looking straight ahead, like he was deaf and it worked. They see he wasn't responding and just drive off.

I've tried this and it works.

{Its a bad idea to get into a argument with a stranger who may hurt you or force you to do worse to them.}

It's the merger's job to match speed and position to a moving space in the right lane. Many times a move to the left lane is not available, and the rest of the time there is typically plenty of space ahead and behind those in the right lane.

Large Trucks are a different situation.

I’m one of those guys that, in a 15 foot long car will merge into a 16 foot gap. It’s especially fun if the guy on the back side of the gap was trying to gut me off.

And sometimes I’ll go for the 14 foot gap. They always hit the brakes. The key is to act like you don’t see them. ;-)

The left lane at rush hour is typically full of strings of tailgaters who tend to get into accordion crashes. Best to stay away from them.

For sure, but the worst are the thick heads who stay in the left lane at 65 causing road blocs.

“He was a good guy but often forgot to signal before changing lanes”

The problem with that is that many people think that a turning signal gives them the right-of-way.

Yeah, I figured out about 20 yr ago that at least half of the folks loved to hang out in the left lane. I have now no problems now passing on the right and continuing merrily on my way.

In CA, using your turn signals before changig lanes is code of everyone in that lane to bunch up and not let you in.

Depends where you are . I usually try to get into the left lane if possible. But when I drive in the Twin Cities, they have a policy called “zippering” where you’re supposed to slow down and let the merging car in. They don’t like lots of cars changing lanes during rush hours. Took me a while to get used to it.
