A credit card belonging to a Wall Street Journal reporter who mysteriously vanished while taking a walk from his New Jersey home on Saturday has since been used in Mexico, according to a report.

Sources close to 55-year-old David Bird's family told NBC New York that his credit card was used across the border on Wednesday night.

They said his family fears that his coverage of OPEC for the Journal may be connected to his disappearance.

Bird, who is an energy markets reporter for the paper, was last seen at his home in Long Hill Township around 4:30 p.m., according to police.

Officials said he regularly walks the trails in Hick's Tract in Millington, N.J. He was wearing a red jacket, blue jeans, sneakers and glasses when he left home.

Search crews have since combed nearby wetlands and river areas in their desperate hunt to find him.

I read that there’s some suspicion that this may be connected to some articles he was writing on OPEC. There are a lot of changes going on in the oil world in Mexico right now, and maybe somebody was trying to shut him up.

He left his cell phone at home when he went out for a walk, so hopefully if he was lured out there to meet someone, there will be a record of the call. Or maybe somebody was watching him and waiting for their chance. It doesn’t sound good for him, in any case.

This is a strange story. When I first saw it in the headlines a couple of days ago, of course I thought he disappeared while away from home somewhere exotic. Now I find out he disappeared while out for a walk.

very weird. Dunno, if he just left the family and become gay or if this is really connected to something like opec.

“He had a liver transplant and has to take medication.”

Hildy makes note of this, which I had read before. He didn’t take those meds with him either.

I suppose he might have stashed some drugs and a getaway bag somewhere, but I don’t know, and per what another poster said, the credit card use could be run of the mill fraud, unrelated?

Really weird. We may never know, but it’s odd with a middle aged man.

I hate to sound awful, but with women you figure they’ve been set upon by some psycho killer and with young men you figure they got drunk and stupid, but this....

I hope he turns up OK.

Someone in Mexico is using the credit cards that Americans won’t use.

Millington NJ is about 9 miles west of Short Hills Mall, where NJ lawyer Dustin Friedland was murdered last month in the Range Rover carjacking.

Unlikely Mr. Bird would have decided to travel to Mexico at the spur of the moment without taking his transplant rejection drugs.

I’m hoping he bolted, and made sure his cards ended up in the hands of folks that could throw people looking for him off track.

People tend to take their phones everywhere. I’m biased, though, because I have kids with medical conditions that require me to be in touch.

A reporter choosing not to take his CELL PHONE with him, anywhere?

So much room to speculate. If I were running, I’d use a car made in the 1980s and stay away from any place that could afford to install cameras.

Odd that the FAA did not ground all B-747s after the “accident”? At first I doubted the government's explanation. Now, I think that they are liars, every one of them involved.
