At least 14 people -- including four U.N. personnel, an International Monetary Fund representative and a British contractor -- were killed Friday in a suicide bombing and shootout at a restaurant in the center of Kabul, authorities said.

The suicide attacker's bomb exploded at the restaurant's gate about 7:30 p.m. Two armed men then entered the restaurant and started shooting, Afghan Deputy Interior Minister Mohammed Ayoub Salangi said.

Afghan security forces killed the gunmen during a shootout, according to Salangi.

What nationality are the “UN personnel”?

And what kind of “personnel” are they? Military?
Non-military?

And I hate to say it, but what kind of intelligent person
eats at a restaurant in Kabul and thinks that
will be safe?

The American Embassy in Kabul better have a big rooftop helicopter pad as Obama’s fail policy is forcing a Saigon April30, 1975 redux.

I, for one, would like to know what they ordered and what they thought of the service.

If you are dumb enough to go there you should expect what will happen to you there.

Intelligent people don’t stick their fingers in the flame and expect that they won’t be burned.

Could there ever be a better case for crushing the Taliban and getting out? This nation building/using soldiers as policemen is insane.

Surely, there are some good people in Afghanistan and Iraq, but they are burdened with the scourge of islam. They need a strong, brutal dictator to keep the islamists in check. They need a leader just a s brutal as they are.

You cannot teach them to live in a democracy.

4 UN, 1 IMF member....hey Free Trade works!

According to CBC (Canada) two of the dead were Canadians who were not tied to any government or Globalist agency (tourists in Afghanistan?)

No they don’t need a brutal dictator. They will have no advancement. You might as well nominate the Taliban to lead the government.

You don’t need to teach democracy. They learn it fine on their own.

Expect the bloodshed to continue in tribal-based societies. It’s how they sort things out. Eventually all the hot heads will die out. What will emerge will be a stable, self-representative government adept at eliminating militants.

I agree that whatever government results will be adept at eliminating militants. And to do that,it must be brutal. I do not think fair and free elections are in the cards, hence the “dictator”.

I wish the people the very best; I am just bitter about the way our military personnel have been abused due to the disrespect by our politicians, both past and present.

I've eaten at that restaurant in 2008. The food was delicious and reasonable.

In Kabul, terrorist attacks are like car accidents. -- you don't stop driving because a friend died in a car accident. And you don't stop living and trying to help because people are killed in a terrorist attack.

There's little for foreign aid workers to do in Kabul. There's a few shopping places, a few swimming pools, and a few exercise facilities. Eating out is the most common diversion. This is one reason why some agencies limit staff to 6 to 8 weeks in-country before taking a mandatory 1-week R&R in Dubai or elsewhere.

The UN has a limited list of restaurants that their staff and contractors can eat it. My unofficial security index was how many restaurants were on the list. It was once zero for months, which is where it now is for sure.

I was one of the few western aid workers who would sometimes eat at Afghan restaurants. I had good Afghan friends who knew which ones were healthy to eat it, in safe enough neighborhoods, and clean. I figured they were less of a security risk, and more supportive of the local economy, besides having delicious food and being a fraction of the cost of the "approved" restaurants.

I also ate there quite often. The owner was a friend of mine and would always stop by my table to say hello.

Wine and liquor and delicious food, reasonably priced. We often rented the upstairs for departures and arrivals get togethers.

Just another senseless bloody atrocity from the religion of peace.

2003-2011, in-country and everywhere in-country. I decided I had seen enough and have not been back since.
