Campbell Brown: Unions Won’t Support Bill to Keep Sex Predators Out of Classrooms
Washington Free Beacon ^ | 1/17/14 | Campbell Brown

Two of the most powerful unions in the country have voiced objections to a bill that would provide better background checks for teachers, Campbell Brown writes in a Thursday Wall Street Journal column.

After the Government Accountability Office found “hundreds of potential cases of registered sex offenders working in schools” across the United States in 2010, the House passed a bill that would streamline the vetting process and close inconsistencies across state lines.

The bill is a common sense measure, according to Campbell, yet powerful teachers unions are opposed to the new standards.

Anyone with violent or sexual convictions against a child—whether a misdemeanor or felony—would be ineligible for school employment. Background checks would be more thorough, using expanded databases including the FBI’s fingerprint database, the national and state sex offender registries. And districts would be prohibited from knowingly unloading sex abusers on other schools—a practice known as “pass the trash.”

These are sensible measures that are overdue. Yet the two most powerful teachers unions in the country have voiced objections to the bill. Both the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers complained about the bill before it passed the House. The NEA claimed in a letter to House members that background checks “often have a huge, racially disparate impact.” Randi Weingarten, the AFT chief, warned of inaccuracies in the FBI database and cautioned that teachers would be inconvenienced by potentially long screening delays.

Common core taught by common whores. Now background checks are racist? Is Randy Weingarten insinuating, by playing the disparate impact card, that a certain racial demographic is more prone to, putting it mildly, inappropriate sexual behavior than others? Who's the real racist here?

Sounds like they want perverts in the same classrooms as their children.

Once unions were necessary. My grandfather helped organize the UMW in the 30’s but now I don’t see anything good coming from them. The commies intend to destroy the people of this nation starting with the kids. I don’t have any children but if I did there is no way in hell these a55holes would have them for 8 hours a day. I got out of high school in 72 and even then there were female teachers having sex with students. Appears it has just gotten worse.

I wouldn’t wish that upon any child. I wouldn’t want to be that teacher, or member of that union after such a teacher went missing.

Time to break the Unions—This is a pervestion of all who love teaching and children. They have too much power and I believe they are now more about money and power than teaching or children. I am a teacher too.

The Democrats’ War on Children continues.

They are decidedly pro-rape.

While I completely agree that severance pay for a teacher who is fired for cause is ridiculous, I would like to warn parents that you should not expect your children to be protected through legislative means, Anywhere there are children gathered, there will be predators. It is your responsibility as parents to protect your children, no one can do it for you.

When I was in school, there were several teachers preying on students. At the time, we blamed the students for getting involved with the teachers. There was one gay man who entertained the boys at his home, a middle aged woman who liked the male athletes and a young male teacher, who preyed on girls with low self esteem. Of all of them, the only one who got caught was the young man who preyed on the girls, but it wasn’t until ten years later, when another teacher caught him using a hole that he had drilled into the girls’ locker room to photograph the girls.

Parents need to remember that their kids should not be spending time alone with an unrelated adult. It is not normal for an adult to want spend time alone with an unrelated child. If you doubt me, think Sandusky.

School used to do background checks and it didn’t seem to prevent the predators from getting through. It would have only stop the ones that had already been caught and convicted. I am afraid this is local or state issue. I don’t like federal interference in the schools. My suggestion is that school districts put in a clause denying severance pay to any teacher who is fired for cause.

HUH? Did the NEA just say that blacks and or Latinos are more likely to have criminal records then whites? Sure sounded that way to me..............

THIS is the line in the sand that teachers unions are drawing?

Defending the hiring of sexual predators?

I would think that they would be fully behind efforts to prevent molestations.

It doesn't make unions look too good.

And frankly, why do they want the liability?

Someday a parent isn't going to go after the schools with lawsuits, they'll go after the unions, and it won't be pretty.

Because the unions are publically supporting sex offenders, they had "foreknowledge" this could happen.

Look at what has happened to the Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts.

Multi-millions of dollars paid out because they covered up abuse, or knowingly hired perverts.

I can't imagine that teachers unions are exempt from lawsuits.

Yes. And if the shoe were on the other foot, there would already be lawsuits seeking serious damages and highly prescriptive remedial actions.

What does that even mean in this case?
