Nearly all of the ATMs in the world are running the Windows XP operating system, introduced by Microsoft 13 years ago—and incredibly out of date, as any tech enthusiast will tell you.

On April 8, Microsoft will officially end the tech support for the aging OS, which was replaced by Windows Vista in 2007, Windows 7 in 2009, Windows 8 in 2012 and Windows 8.1 in 2013. […]

If an ATM isn’t upgraded, it will continue to function, experts said. Withdrawals, deposits, and other transactions will work as they did before. But the machines will be more vulnerable to cyber robbers wielding malware and other attacks as time goes on. …

I was at Staples office store a couple of years back and their cash registers crashed. They were displaying the Windows NT logo!

Bank of America ATM’s use Windows XP. I saw a blue screen error on one.

Some very good points about Windoze 8.x but I suggest that your bragging about how fast it is relates strictly to the fact that you have 32Mb of core. Typical systems have 4-8 Mb when purchased these days.

All Windoze versions are memory hogs and their performance is directly related to how much core is available. And while 8.x is more efficient than Win Me, it still looks like Jabba the Hutt when compared to a Linux OS (Han Solo).

It runs just as fast in as little as 4-6gb. I tested OS speed and resource utilization first, then started to add apps and test again.

Of course, the more apps one runs simultaneously the more memory required. I do a lot of virtualization this my high memory requirements.
