More plug-in electric cars were sold in the US than ever before in their third year of sales. The 2013 total of roughly 90,000 electric vehicles didn't quite double the 2012 total of about 53,000,  but the numbers seem likely to grow again this year.

I had the opportunity to ride in a friend’s Tesla last week, and I have to say it is a very impressive car. For commuting, he is able to go four days between charges. It’s an expensive car, but commuting in a temperate clime is the perfect use case for it.

I am 100% opposed to any government subsidies, however. Just because the tech is cool doesn’t mean that the taxpayers need to pay for it.

mmmmmm..... apparently you can’t answer my question either.

This credit replaces an earlier credit for EVs purchased in 2009.

Small neighborhood electric vehicles do not qualify for this credit, but they may qualify for another credit.

true. that’s a problem for electric cars. and will remain so for some time and stop them cold in colder climates.

Its likely no coincidence that the Tesla is built and has most of its sales in california where the temperature is perfect for electric cars.

Another big question is “How many were purchased as taxi’s”? It seems like a high proportion of cabs in CA are Prius.

out of 18 million cars sold in just the usa last year...big whoop. It’s like a lot of litte Edsels.
.............
true and the whole thing would not be interesting if it were not that sales tripled in 2012 and doubled again in 2013. Tesla expects their sales to double in 2014 from 20k to 40k. Once again this is a drop in the bucket. However, the trend and the rate of uptake bear watching.

The big thing comes in 2016 when Tesla promises to deliver a car for 30k that can go 250 miles per charge. That’s something only their 80k Tesla S class can do.

If Tesla delivers, then the electric car business takes off.

It looks like sales of electric vehicles are moving up fast.

More early retirees buying golf carts.
............

I hadn’t heard that. It’s an important fact to know isn’t it.

Thanks.

This all happened about the same time that Obama put the CEO (I think) of General Electric on as part of his staff. Can’t imagine anyone giving that up for Obama. Dumb in my mind.

I saw a hybrid running slowly on its tiny engine on the Rockies a few weeks ago. Wonder if they made it to another gas station.

there’s something missing in all this. what does it do to the electric grid if 6 million cars are plugged in overnight
