Obama says marijuana 'no more dangerous than alcohol'
CNN ^ | Jan 19, 2014 | Kevin Liptak

Speaking to New Yorker editor David Remnick, Obama said he still viewed pot smoking negatively – but that on the whole, the drug wasn’t the social ill that it’s been viewed as in the past.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life. I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol,” Obama told the weekly magazine.

The president said pot was actually less dangerous than alcohol “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer.”

I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol

A breathalyzer test doesn't work with marijuana, people can give underage kids marijuana-laced cookies without parents knowing it, and it is a lot worst on the lungs than smoking.

As always Obama is lying but, hey, what else is new?

Would you be a passenger on a plane whose pilot is high on drugs?

That's for the airline hiring the pilot to decide - to write up requirements and penalties in the hiring and working contract with the pilot.

Not to mention that marijuana is a “gateway drug”, i.e. those who smoke it, are more likely to go on to hard drugs.

Lots of drunks do hard drugs too. Alcohol is more dangerous than pot.

1st he said he views it negatively, but then says it’s less dangerous than alcohol. Can he make it 5 minutes without telling a lie?

IIRC, the real gateway drug was cigarettes according to the research 2 decades ago.

Is he going to use his pen to declare marijuana legal on a federal level?

Maybe he should and then the individual states could vote on whether they want to criminalize it or not --something we never got to do in the first place.

“The real problems are when someone uses drugs or alcohol to excess.”

Bingo. That goes for just about anything.

Any addiction is bad for you and those around you, that’s the bottom line.

Virtually nobody smokes anymore, or certainly not on the prior scale, so I don’t think that’s it.

The fact is that pot is not good for you and also has no social history. Alcohol has been used by many cultures throughout history, has health benefits, and is only a problem when it is used to excess.

Marijuana, hashish and the derivatives are popular in ME cultures (we can all see how great they are!) because Islam permits it. It has no health benefits other than being a pain killer, the smoke is worse than tobacco smoke in terms of tars, and it has a proven record of causing long term problems without even long term use, particularly among adolescents.

Look at an alcohol permitting culture and a pot permitting culture. Which one do you want to be part of?

I have smoked it in the past.

It is much less harmful than alcohol. I am in favor of decriminalizing it.

But like anythign else, in moderations.

If ytou drink every day you are an alcoholic and start to exhibit symptoms of over-use.

If you smoke pot every day the same thing happens. You need to keep use to a minimum and use moderation. Otherwise you get stupid and paranoid and cannot function.

That’s the thing. If you’re going to use that argument, you must say that all drugs, including antibiotics and all prescriptions, must be legal to take on demand as much as you want. So get on the bandwagon to legalize meth and the rest, otherwise you’re picking and choosing just like Hussein here is doing or else you will truly be a hypocrite.

The government should not be in the business of regulating our bodies or what we decide to put into them. That applies to any and all substances. It is up to me to make those decisions. And it is I who should suffer the consequences if my choices have a bad result.

Ok good, at least you admit to the insanity of no holds barred.

No social history... only where there’s been hemp, fire, and some imagination. Maybe it’s such a small deal that it doesn’t gain the opprobrium that alcohol does.

I think you are being “conservative politically correct.” (Yes there is such a thing.)

I say the sooner we stop scapegoating THINGS the sooner we can credibly call PEOPLE to account for what they DO.

Ok good, at least you admit to the insanity of no holds barred.

What you refer to as "insanity" I think of as liberty. We have become so accustomed to government making our decisions that it must seem crazy to imagine a world where we took responsibility for ourselves. We have evolved into a society of dependent children.

But it was not always so. As insane as it may seem, there was a time -- in this very country -- when there was no DEA, no FDA, no ATF, no DOE. Adult citizens, not bureaucrats, made their their decisions and lived with the consequences. Are we better off now? Well, that depends on your point of view. We are certainly less free. Are we healthier? Happier? One could certainly debate those points.

You seem much more concerned about what substances people use than in restraining the federal government to constitutional limits.
