He voted for someone who wasn't running for Speaker (only Bohner and Pelois were), in fact who isn't even in the House this session. It was a meaningless symbolic vote.

What Lou Gohmert didn't do was step up and run for Speaker himself. No fun in that job. Better to make his safe, symbolic and meaningless votes. He gets cheered for that.

I wasn’t aware that people “ran” for speaker in the conventional sense.

I was always under the impression that people were nominated by the Congress and then voted for.

So Gohmert nominated someone else and voted for him. Sadly most voted for Boehner. Perhaps I’m wrong about the procedure...and I have no doubt you will let me know if you think I am. ;)
