Windows 8: What's The Big Deal?
January 22, 2014 | This Just In

Posted on 01/22/2014 9:52:38 PM PST by This Just In

So our child finally received that Asus notebook as a gift from a loved one-as some of you already know from a previous post (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-bloggers/3110216/posts).

After reading all of the comments, and visiting various sites concerning Windows 8, we finally got to experience the OS for ourselves.

The box was delivered just in time for school. Spring college courses, as many of your know, have started. We were edger to get started with the notebook. Encouraging the kid to start familiarizing himself with the tool. I was especially curious to see for myself whether or not all the talk/bemoaning about Windows 8 was all it was cracked up to be.

Frankly, I was hoping the naysayers were all prone to exaggeration, and that this notebook would be a breeze to work with (namely, Windows 8). We own a MacBook Pro as well as a Dell with Windows XP. A cinch to use right out of the box. Why would I want my child to have to deal with an OS that is so counter-intuitive, so moronically bass ackwardly unsimple (is that a word? If not, it should be for this very reason)? So there I was, secretly hoping that the bemoaners were just chronic, nitpicky complainers.

Well, I've just joined the Chronic-Nitpicky-Exaggerating-Naysayers-Anti-Windows 8-Club.

For goodness sakes. You mean to tell me that some genius designed! that OS?! Honestly...

For the last several days these are the sounds/reactions I've been hearing from the college kid while "working" on the notebook:

"Sigh. Why is it so slow?" "This is taking forever" "What does this mean?"

Just yesterday, after hearing about our new notebook-without any prompting, a coworker calmly and flatly stated, "If you can't figure out how to turn it off, it's a Windows 8".

That brief statement was on the money. Why should it take a magnifying glass, blood hound, a world atlas, and Stephen Hawking to figure out how to turn off the friggin machine?!

So, in closing, I would like to say hello to my new friends in this not-so-exclusvie-club of Window 8ters. I can now officially commiserate with you.

If any of you have any advice, recommendations, or Windows 8 experiences that you wish to share with the rest of us, please do.

Although, here is my concern:

If we install a program, wouldn’t this void the warranty?

I so hate windows 8. Damn side bar stuff shows up frequently, except when i want it to show up so i can turn off the computer. I also miss being able to look down at the bottom of the computer to see what time it is. Why do these people think it’s so much better to redesign something to the point where people have to learn stuff they thought they were already done learning. Same with those websites that redesign their pages to the point where you have to once again figure out where everything is, it is damn annoying.

A Toyota Prius commercial? That sums up your views on Windows 8? I don’t get it.

Shouldn’t it be called Boxes 8 instead of Window 8?

I just went straight from XP to this 8.1, and after I got into tweaking it to my liking, I became a big fan.

I am so glad that I did not listen to the nonsense about installing Classic Shell, and take a big step backward.

Once you start personalizing your computer you will find that it is easy to shape to your liking.

Like I said, if you want to change something, google for the method.

By the way, I just re-installed “XP service pack 1” on my old 2003 computer to start preparing it for maximum utility and security (as an online backup for repairs) after the April cut-off, I then loaded Service pack 3, years of updates and adjustments and tweaks, security programs and so on.

I think a lot of you have forgotten how dismal XP used to be, compared to the version of it that you were using recently.

This list of con’s on this OS is nothing short of incredible. And we thought Vista was bad.

No matter what upgrade you choose, some work is going to be required. For most people who have been using Windows, Windows 8 or Windows 7 is going to be the best option. Microsoft has been treating end users like ants for over 30 years, but they’ve also made a fortune and dominated their market. Yes, they are an Evil Empire, but don’t add to the misery by not trying some simple fixes for 8.

The biggest problem I have with ALL of the “tablet” or “smartphone” devices is this: “How the F do you QUIT!!! an APPLICATION??!?”

With Android devices, go into Applications, find the Task manager, and put it on the home screen. You can always turn off your applications with Task Manager.

Right,at least they don’t break and get viruses and they last for years. You sound like you never knew how to operate one with that statement.I work in the music business and no one wants anything to do with a PC!

Let’s try this again:

If it doesn’t start out with Weird Japanese Commercials, the link is not working. Although, it worked for me when I tried again.

My brother in law got a Wndows 8 laptop. He likes it because he never previously used any other versions of Windows. He spend a lot of time going through the manual and online tutorials and it seems OK for the very limited use he makes of his laptop... Primarily email and a limitled web surfing. However as an experienced Windows XP and Windows 7 user I about went nuts just trying to remove the bloat ware and install Avast anti virus on his Windows 8 laptop.

I am very happy with Windows 7 that I installed when I rebuilt my desktop. Just be sure to load up on RAM..I'm running 6GB. I also really improved the performance of my Windows 7 machine when I updated all the component drivers to the very latest versions

Our receptionist started crying after she got her computer with W8, even weeks later.

I knew a woman (liberal) who used a pc regularly for 3 years and never grasped the concept of Windows Explorer. She had no idea where to find her files if the application didn't list it in recently used files. I finally quit talking to her; a waste of time.

I’m glad you’re able to make it twerk for you (pun intended). :^)

I haven’t had any big complaints about XP, frankly.

Win8 was the final straw for me. After a few days trying to figure out
where everything is it dawned on me that any time a run a program from the Metro UI,
I end up on the desktop. I just don't see the need for Metro. There were so many querks
that I took the plunge. I bought a screaming new computer and put Linux on it. Up until this system, Linux always got the hand-me-down from my Windows machines. Well not any more, it is the main desktop that everybody shares. I did put my old system in a VirtualBox VM just in case there's something I still need but there hasn't be a whole bunch of activity on it lately. Now I just need to convince my kids that iTunes is straight from the pit of all that is evil, I can get rid of the VM too.-

Microsoft did away with the Start button and replaced it with the Start Screen because they found that Windows 7 users were using the Start button less and less. They also made the computer hard to shutdown because they want people to use the sleep mode instead.

“Nothing could be worse than a Mac.”

You’re joking, yes? Tell me you’re joking. We’ve used XP, Mac Lion OS, Linux, and now Windows 8.

Windows 8 can’t touch Mac. Period.

I never met a female that could work a VCR, and during the 90s I started looking into that, even to asking my female customers if they knew how to set the timer to record something when they weren’t at home. I never found any that knew how to do it.
