Indiana State Police say Interstate 94 eastbound near Michigan City is closed because of a multi-vehicle crash involving several trucks and cars, with at least 2 people dead, according to ABC affiliate WLS-TV.
Authorities tell the station the crash involves at least a dozen semi-trucks and "too many vehicles to count."
The crash happened Thursday afternoon on eastbound I-94 near W 400 N. All eastbound lanes of I-94 are shut down and traffic is backed up for miles. Traffic is getting through slowly on the westbound lanes.
WLS-TV reports there may be more people trapped inside the vehicles underneath the semis. Heavy equipment is being brought in to assist in extrication efforts.
La Porte County coroner John Sullivan says WLS-TV teams of coroners from surrounding counties have been called to the scene.
At least 15-20 people with minor injuries have been transported to area hospitals in a bus, so as not to tie up ambulances. Emergency vehicles from several surrounding counties have responded to the scene, the station reported.

Terrible. Was there snow or some kind of problem that caused this?
Here is another link, it looks like it was caused by whiteout conditions.

Prayers for all of those affected.
Terrible. Prayers for them. A white-out is unbelievably terrifying. What can you do and where will you be safe?
It was an intense snowburst, the cold weather equivalent to a line of thunderstorms.
I was driving thru it last night and visibility was very poor.
Winds 30-50mph. We joke a lot about “near blizzard conditions” but this was probably a case of the real thing.
The temp dropped from 19F to 13F in about 5 miles of travel.
I was on a two-lane exurban road that had a small whiteout area right where the two-lane changed to four-lane. Despite almost zero visibility (maybe a car length), two jack-donkey pickup drivers immediately ACCELERATED into the new right lane and the faster one behind hit the tail of of the PU in front and tore off his own front bumper when he finally braked.
Prolly FReepers who have bragged here about commuting to their office jobs in their Ford F250s.
Please remove post 7, methinks it is not really a live stream.
I travel this road at least once a week.
In the winter I’m really surprised this doesn’t happen more often. On a clear day you can go from sunny to white out in the blink of an eye.
RIP.
A photo shoot with 16 images if anyone is interested.
