A 'tsunami' of store closings expected to hit retail

Laying off 2300 workers, but open 15 new stores?

“We realized we had pretty much the same club structure whether a club had $50 million in revenue or $100 million in revenue,” Mr. Durling said of the distribution of assistant managers. “What we’re trying to do is balance our resources.”

Sam’s Club has about 116,000 employees, Mr. Durling said, and the job cuts will affect about four employees a store.

"Laying off 2300 workers, but open 15 new stores?"

Walmart appears to be fine tuning their staff. 2% is not a major adjustment in employee population. Plus Walmart told them they have 60 days to find another position in the company, possibly in one of those 15 new stores.

Remember, liberals HATE Walmart, so the NYT is probably reporting this minor company adjustment with glee.

Look for articles talking about how "Women & minorities hit hardest!" and "If these poor Walmart workers were unionized, this would not be happening!" (most likely true - Union featherbedding would give them jobs-for-life, plus three new shop stewards per store.)

That’s not surprising. It’s increasing the efficiency of each store. If they weren’t opening up new stores, it would have meant even more layoffs.

I may be small potatoes, but my wife & I are closing our store this year. This will put 3 part-timers (mom’s) out of work and affect roughly 250 customers. The business-unfriendly environment by this administration has killed us. We were struggling before, and now we’re underwater. While we love what we do, the primary focus of a business is to make money. Time to cut the loss...

As long as they don't cut the person that cooks the chicken.

Sam's sells a full three pound, whole chicken, cooked over open flame, for $4.98. It is delicious and is the best buy for cooked food...bar none {just my opinion}.

I hope most of the 2300 laid off are cashiers. There are always too many of them crowding the Sams Clubs.
