NOVO-OGARYOVO, January 22 (RIA Novosti) – Russia’s population showed natural growth of 22,650 people last year despite a declining birthrate, the country’s health minister said Tuesday.

The mortality rate over the first 11 months decreased by 19,000 deaths compared with the same period in 2012, while the birth rate dropped by only 919 births, Health Minister Veronika Skvortsova said in a report to President Vladimir Putin.

She said the number of deaths from tuberculosis was down 10 percent, while deaths caused by road accidents dropped 1.4 percent.

She didn’t say how much the current population is. At the beginning of last year, the State Statistics Service reported Russia’s population was 143.4 million people.

The mortality rate in Russia is still sickeningly high compared to most countries. You know something’s wrong when a fairly well-developed country like Russia has a mortality rate comparable to Somalia, Chad, Zimbabwe and Mali.

Russia is a big country with many different nationalities. I suspect the European part of Russia isn’t that bad compared to the rest of the country.

Chrietian conservatives tired of being libelled as “homophobic”...seems to be a rebirth of religious freedom over there.

Alcohol is a main problem affecting mortality there. Heart deceased, traffic and workplace incidents, homicides at drank disputes, deaths from being exposed to outdoor environment in winter etc.
Russian are in their another attempt to restrict this habit nationwide and it seems like working.

In fact European part and stans are the most derpessive. Apart from two capitals, I think West Siberia, Middle Urals and Krasnodar region are the most developed. West Siberia is due to a mineral extraction, Urals is somehow manages to maintain extensive manufacturing and Krasnodar is an agriculture powerhouse. Moscow and St.Petersburg are ok from their share redistributing wealth created in these places to the rest of Russia an their 3rd world pals.
