I can understand the woman being brain dead and all, but how can the family allow the baby to be killed..that baby is this woman’s legacy, and instead of keeping her alive for the baby’s sake til he or she is born they instead let her die..its despicable..and what just happened to that child is abortion plain and simple..at least let the baby be born and see if he could have survived in this world, now we will never know

The article only said "the fetus was not viable." I wish more had been explained on that, but I have very low expectations for CNN.

Weren't we playing God when we put her on the ventilator?

You just don't get it. We interfered in the first place. And they said the baby was not viable.

The woman was 14 weeks pregnant when she collapsed and subsequently died. A non viable fetus is not meant to be kept alive inside what is essentially a corpse with organs that are kept functioning through artificial means. If the baby had been close to term enough where it could survive with or without medical intervention I would be in favor of the hospital doing a C section. But this was a travesty. When a pregnant woman dies before the child is ready to be born the child dies too. Sad as it is, that is the truth.

If a brain dead pregnant woman’s body is to be kept functioning in order for a fetus to reach viability why not argue that the wombs of female coma patients be used to implant embryos for infertile women? After all if we reduce a human being to the functionality of his or her organs it seems such a waste to worry about things like human dignity.

A mother and child are dead. May the family find peace to bury their dead and mourn.

My step dad is a doctor in DFW. There are significant details about the condition of the baby that haven’t been released outside of the local medical community.

The sonograms, MRIs, and other tests revealed without a doubt that the baby had no chance to develop normally within the womb of a dead and deteriorating body or to survive outside of the womb once delivered prematurely.

I know that doctors have said the same about babies in utero before and that the baby was later delivered healthy and happy, but this was not going to be one of those cases.

The irony is that she was already on the ventilator two months. Two more, and the baby could have lived without her. Halfway there, so to speak.
