President Barack Obama will announce on Tuesday he is issuing an executive order to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour for federal contract workers with new contracts, the White House said.

In his State of the Union address, Obama will also call on Congress to pass a bill that would increase the federal minimum wage for all workers to $10.10 an hour from $7.25 and index that to inflation going forward.

The executive order for new contracts or existing contracts in which terms are being changed would take effect at the beginning of next year. Issuing the order allows Obama to bypass Congress in a limited way, with Republicans opposed to a broad increase in the minimum wage.

If the GOP were smart they would come back with a major cut in payroll and income taxes across the board.

Let the democrats whine about minimum wage while keeping the taxes high.

"However, it will raise the wage of all union workers because they have a clause that keeps them x% above the minimum wage."

BINGO!

Democrats are predictable. I can tell you their response to both. To wit:

Cut payroll taxes? You're starving Social Security and advocating a veiled attempt to do away with it altogether.

Cut income taxes? You want to cut taxes for the 1 percent while denying working people a living wage. Cutting taxes across the board won't help their base since with current tax breaks and credits most pay little or no income tax to begin with.

this is a useless gesture.

Not if you are in a union and raises are pinned against minimum wage rates.

You’ll see more automation, more subcontracting and fewer jobs. Mr. Market will not be denied.

Or....Raising the minimum wage will put more people on part-time work or out of a job, thus increasing the number of people on welfare - and more under the control of the ruling party.
