Ripping up the playground rulebook is having incredible effects on children at an Auckland school.

Chaos may reign at Swanson Primary School with children climbing trees, riding skateboards and playing bullrush during playtime, but surprisingly the students don't cause bedlam, the principal says.

The school is actually seeing a drop in bullying, serious injuries and vandalism, while concentration levels in class are increasing.

In the early 70s I wore a 4” folding Buck hunter on my belt to high school every day. Never once thought of it as a weapon to use on fellow students. It was just a tool.

Nobody ever said a word about it. This was an inner suburb school, not a rural one.

Thanks for the ping. This would reduce the sales of Ritalin.

I recall one day when the teacher asked us boys for a knife and selected one from all those offered. Then she said this knife is dull and picked another. Man, that kid got teased for a week about his dull knife. That must have been 5th grade or so.
