Common crop pesticides kill honeybee larvae in the hive
Science Daily/Penn State ^ | 27 JAN 2014 | Sara LaJeunesse/Penn State materials

Four pesticides commonly used on crops to kill insects and fungi also kill honeybee larvae within their hives, according to new research. Scientists also found that N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone -- an inert, or inactive, chemical commonly used as a pesticide additive -- is highly toxic to honeybee larvae.

We aren't using it because of an author (and I use the term loosely) named Rachael Carson, who wrote a propaganda piece called Silent Spring. One of first of the shameless eco-liars, her emotional appeal galvanized the country. Never mind that it was virtually fact free, it worked, as good propaganda does.

People ATE spoonfuls of DDT for a year, with no ill effects.

May Rachael Carson burn in hell for the MILLIONS who've died of malaria as a result of her lies.

Not only was it bees but all kinds of insects. Swarms of butterflies, bizarre looking moths at night, grasshoppers and crickets, etc.

Graham County, NC, way the heck out there.

Probably DDT is a lot more harmless that the bee larvae killing pesticides mentioned above. Europe has banned a few systemic pesticides made by Bayer that is says are killing bees. These Bayer systemics are still legal here in America. I was tempted to use one a few years ago but have not so far

Glad to hear that. ‘Go to SC twice a year. Nestled in there, NC or TN sooner than later, I hope. To be retired in the Great Smokies... ‘Fills my bucket.

dozens of farm crops are dependent on bees; bees do more for American agriculture than simply provide honey

Thank you for the documentary evidence that Dad knew what he was doing. His day job was as a veterinarian. The farming venture was a sideline, mostly to keep five boys busy.

If you want the NC mountains and isolated location, Graham Co. is the place to be. After than there’s portions of Swaim and Clay and Cherokee Counties to consider.

Graham is a dry county no beer, only a couple of Grocery stores, lots of national forest and scattered portions of tribal land.

***People ATE spoonfuls of DDT for a year, with no ill effects.***

Back in the 1960s, PROGRESSIVE FARMER had an article about a man who ate DDT to prove it was harmless.

Several years later, in the letters to the editor, some kid wrote that he had mentioned this in his science class and was called a LIAR! by the teacher, and requested a copy of the article.

The sent him the article and the teacher was proven wrong.
