she is adult and fully able to drive in snow, she after all is from the Pittsburgh area, we know what winter driving and hills are all about...she left her job at 1 p.m. and never got home until 11 p.m. then she parked at a shopping area and hubby came with 4xwheel drive to get her..as their development was so icy no one could drive in it..
totally un accustomed to snow, ice and winter cold...no one there even owns a snow shovel. lol now because when they moved there, son in law handed me his snow shovel and said ‘we won't be needing this’
and I was here worried, yes we parent worry about our kids, from the day they enter our lives until the day we make our exit. so I did not even pay attention to the dumb president with his prepared speech...and sounds like I didn't miss much...
THANKFUL SHE IS SAFELY HOME AND BOSS SAID ‘NO WORK’ TOMORROW..WE WILL STAY CLOSED...YEA she gets a snow day..
Looking at those pics I just cant believe such chaos was created, so many people abandoning with such seemingly little snow on the roads.
Here in new york, we drive through worse conditions with far more snow on the ground. Ive driven my share through many worse snow storms. Except having to drive a little slower than usual, not a problem. And while driving slower than usual, it was always a little more faster than 6-7 hours to go 11 miles. Never took me that long, ever. Maybe more like 30-45 minutes.

Ice was the issue with no salt or sand. Physics does not allow friction.
Kitty litter or oil dry will give you traction on ice, too.
I heard on radio news that one inch ice was expected by 4am in AL & GA. Few people down there have 4x4; the roads have no build up of salt, etc. “Climate changed” fast to ice. And then to boot, all businesses, etc let staff/employees go home at same time.
I feel so sorry for those stranded people.
With one inch of ice even the 4x4’s will have a tough time. Chains will help though. Of course if the road is blocked with the 3 cars that don’t have them....
I hope that most folks will/can just sit tight until it melts. I can’t imagine it will stay frozen for too many days.
I have 3 kids in the atlanta area. One “left work” at 2 p.m. At 5 p.m. she was still in the parking deck unable to get out. Her husband drove to pick her up and had to park 2 miles away, walk to her, then walk her back. They finally got home at 3:30 a.m. (13.5 hours). She works at Perimeter and they live in Forsyth County.
Another daughter ran out of gas on 400. A good samaritan was out delivering gas (at no charge) to people who had run out.
I was on pins and needles all night.
Trains are running but appear to be empty. They claim they will restart some bus service at 8 but I don’t see it happening. If I can I’ll take a screen shot of my GPS. The whole thing is nothing but wreck alerts, cautions and road closings.
I won’t even try to pretend I didn’t enjoy the drive home last night and the drive this morning. I love a challenge. Glad your family is safe.
Hey! That’s the picture weather.com is using on their front page.
You are correct; you don't understand.
It's not snow on Atlanta roadways, it's ice.
More often than not, when it snows in Atlanta the roads are just above the freezing point and the initial snow melts immediately. Within minutes, the below-freezing air freezes the water on the roadways and 1-3" of snow on the grass becomes a 1/2" sheet of ice on the roads.
Large sections of residential metro Atlanta consist of winding, hilly roads.
It's not a matter of driving a school bus or car on snow; it's a matter of driving a school bus or car on an ice rink.

Fail.
See how BAD it was?
Really? I could show you mine. The problem is that snow shovels are quite effective on snow. They don't work as well on solid sheets of ice.
When I said “fail”, I was addressing ctdonath2’s claim that it hasn’t even been 12 hours since ‘this mess started.’ That’s nonsense. By 1:00 yesterday afternoon, I-85 north from downtown was ice.
Everyone got to work/school fine in the morning.
The mess started around noon, fully bad by (as you noted) 1 in the afternoon.
Around midnight I saw the referred-to picture which claimed people had been stuck for 24 hours, which was a stupid comment because (as I noted) the event had only started 12 hours before.
As of this post, it still hasn’t been 24 hours.
Not sure which orifice you’re pulling “fail” out of.
What’s “something else” was the confluence of snow falling just a hair below freezing. Snow hit warm pavement, melted, then temperatures dropped more and froze the melt solid.
This kind of thing (ice storm) happens in northern states with the same results. Just happens more often so it gets shrugged off and people have the sense to not go racing home en masse.
As a result, your post read in present time, as if you were saying at 9:00 a.m. that the mess hadn't even started twelve hours before.
I apologize for the confusion.
I agree. It’s hard to drive on sheets of ice. Acc to weather man they were suppose to get an inch of ice by 4 this morning. And like you said, there was no salt build up on roads like the roads up north because y’all in south haven’t had any snow or ice this season to amt to anything.
