Total chaos: 1-3 inches of snow cripples metro Atlanta

The blizzard of '93 brought more snow than most Atlanta natives had ever seen or will see.

The floods of 2009 brought an unexpected rush of water that submerged interstates.

The winter storm of 2011 took an entire week away from the city.

But the Snow Jam of 2014 might be the single craziest weather day in Atlanta in a generation.

1-to-3 inches of snow, mixed in with an afternoon drive that still hasn't ended has brought Atlanta to its knees again.

“There are certain things we don’t have control over and one of those is the weather. This came rather unexpectedly," Governor Nathan Deal said. "The time frame in which it hit was a very short time frame. And I think we’re better prepared now than we were in 2011.”

Metro Atlanta interstates have been gridlocked since about 1 p.m. Tuesday. Commutes stretched 8-to-10 hours. And that's for those who actually got home.

Thousands have been stranded in their cars just sitting in the middle of the road.

Upstate New York: Many years ago, owned a house on a long drive. It was a bad snow storm.

I dreamed up a brilliant plan. I hooked up the hose to my wash tubs....turned on the hot water and voila...the snow was gone.

Only to be replaced by an inch of ice. We used a pick axe to break it up.

At age 70, I have gained wisdom. I don't do anything....just smile as I watch the guys plow the drives and clean the walks at my complex.

Actually, generally the worst is when it’s very little, or VERY much (as in that pix, although that is when they’ve dug out).

Median amount is probably the best.

That was my dad in rural Va.
They were farmers, and my grand mother would
keep sweet potatoes in the warmer of the wood stove
to give him lunch and to keep him warm on the way.
One christmas he some nuts and an orange, very special
then.

We niver got lost on the way home, we just followed
the bloody foot prints.

2 things here - you can skate around on thin layers (or just slip). The other is these people just aren’t as used to it. Except some of the truckers, who seem to have gotten in trouble anyway.

I had it much easier than my father in law. I rode my bicycle to school. In the morning the wind would be from the south and I had to ride into it. By 3pm the front had come through and I had to ride into the north wind going home. You know what they say about Texas weather, if you don't like the weather just wait a minute and it will get worse. But it was OK, I had a Spam sandwich in my lunch box. No sweet potato for me! Yea Spam!

Yes that is true but the ones we felt sorry for are the few. Marietta had some kind of plan in force. They didn't even attempt to move the kids. While all the rest in the state got kids home.

galoshes
Was going to mention them.

Remember the joke about the couple that was always
having kids? The went to the doctor and he told them
what to do to stop it. but soon they came back in and
the woman was pregnant. The doctor said, “I told you
what to do to prevent this, what went wrong?. and the woman piped up,
“Well, you told us to put a rubber on the organ, but
we didn’t have an organ so we put a galosh on the Piano...”

Wet galoshes, wet gloves, scarves heavy coats, the
cloak room at school was a mess.

So true. This was an administrative screw up. All the schools should have been closed yesterday. Glen Burns warned everyone this storm was coming.

My girlfriend’s husband left work at 1:30PM and did not get home until 8:00 PM.

This whole thing was really handled poorly. What a mess.

I wish I could convince my PA husband he doesn’t have to shovel every single time we get some snow. We have a postage-stamp-sized driveway and driving over a couple inches is not a big deal. However, his idea is if anyone comes up to the door, it needs to be cleared - but he clears everything, anyway!
