SNOWMAGEDDON! Atlanta Shut Down Entirely
Source: Personal observations. | 1/29/2014 | By Laz A. Mataz

Posted on 01/29/2014 7:22:03 AM PST by Lazamataz

Atlanta, Georgia was covered with what, in other parts of the country, might be considered a light dusting of snow. Approximately one to three inches of snow fell since noon Tuesday, and continued until about 5:00PM that same day.

Due to poor planning, bad decisions by employers and school officials, and slow reaction by commuters, a gridlock has happened that put the entire Metro area, and many major highways, entirely out of commission.

There are reports of some people who have been in their cars, stationary, for as many as 16 hours -- including one person who reports being on the road 21 hours. Many motorists have run out of gasoline, and quite a few commuters abandoned their vehicles to go into local restaurants and stores to keep warm.

HERO rescue trucks and salt-spreading vehicles have found it impossible to perform their duties due to the complete gridlock. Various city and county officials cannot predict when the crisis will ease.

It is estimated that 100,000 to as many as 250,000 people have been stranded overnight, and since the prediction is for no temperature increase over freezing (except for briefly midday) there is no estimate to when the gridlock will ease.

Road conditions are called 'extremely slick and very icy' and many accidents have been reported.

Will keep you updated as I hear more.

The South is completely unprepared to deal with icy roads, and the officials really dropped the ball. I imagine they will get appointments to the Obama administration for their incompetence.

It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.

One of my Facebook friends last night was discussing his drive from Daytona Beach to Houston. He said he was trying to avoid driving through New Orleans because “they aren’t as prepared for ice storms as they are for hurricanes.”

If their response to Katrina was any indication, Nawlins is gonna be TOTALLY PWNED by an ice storm...

I’m in Connecticut and driving in snow and on ice is hard. I don’t poke fun at southerners for making the reasonable decision not to do what you have no experience doing. I wish such thinking were more common generally.

I think the problem is unequal distribution of snow removal equipment. Is it fair that Minneapolis and Buffalo should have so much, and Atlanta hardly anything?? I think Obama should develop a WH task force to address this immediately!!

Seriously, even though we’re shivering up here in Pittsburgh in sub-zero weather, I do have sympathy for y’all stuck on the roads down there in Atlanta. I don’t know how I could have handled a 16-hour commute. I hope everyone got home ok.

A blonde woman was in a snowstorm and got lost. But she remembered what her father had told her to wait until a snow plow came along and to follow it. Sure enough a little while later a snow plow did come along so whe started to follow it. After a while the snow plow driver got out of his truck and said, “I’m finished with the Wal-Mart parking lot but you can follow me over to Home Depot if you want.”

Well I certainly hope all extra weight build up due to that ice doesn’t cause the southeast portion of the country to capsize like might happen to Guam. :>}

I am in the middle of the Florida Panhandle. Right now it is 22 degrees outside. Ice hanging on tree limbs and the ground is covered with ice.

Not much traffic but the highway looks clear except some ice on the shoulders. I did go outside to take some pictures and noticed slippery ice as soon as I got out of the garage.

Look at the bright side, Laz.

The snow will freeze the zombies in place for easy dispatch.

You are right. I am home, warm, in PJ's, just had breakfast, and have all the essentials.

I am so screwed.

My response to this Snowmageddon cheers me. I had enough mental training about serious crisis situations, to have the presence of mind to leave work very early, and to have all the supplies I need. I believe from my experiences this time, I may just make it through the Grid Down.

And once I make it through that, I am so screwed.

Yes - snowplow inequality will indeed be leveraged as the new divisive rallying point!

A friend who relo’d to ATL said the city does have one snowplow, purchased in 2011 and never since used, that it was going to break out. But ATL is pretty spread out..

To this day, twenty years after the Northridge Earthquake, I still carry a roll of TP and an empty large coffee can in the trunks of our vehicles.

We lived on the "wrong side" of the collapsed Newhall Pass interchange, and it could take six hours each way to commute....months and months of that sh*t really grinds you down.
