Sen. Landrieu blasts White House for opposition to bill delaying flood insurance premium increases

WASHINGTON -- Sen. Mary Landrieu, D-La., Tuesday sharply criticized what she called the Obama administration's "short-sighted, misguided and irresponsible" opposition to legislation delaying flood insurance premium increases for four years.

Though the statement of administration policy didn't include a veto threat, Landrieu said the White House's position, "threatens the very foundation of the National Flood Insurance Program and will only saddle taxpayers with higher costs when disasters strike."

Just before the White House policy statement was released the Senate voted 86-13 to begin debate on legislation that would delay most increases resulting from the 2012 Biggert-Waters Act so, sponsors say, FEMA can complete an affordability study and Congress can work to insure that policyholders don't face unaffordable flood insurance premiums. The bill's sponsors said people will be priced out of the flood insurance program if premium increases contemplated by FEMA under Biggert-Waters are implemented -- putting taxpayers on the line to help out homeowners devastated by future hurricanes and storms.

She was yapping about this during the “shutdown” days in the Fall.

Hey gang, check the elevation of your house and compare it to nearby waterways and bodies of water. If a substantial rain is likely to change your lifestyle in that location, it’s your business, and government is not the solution.

I can’t believe that the Obama Administration is actually opposing socialism for once. Of course Landrieu needs to buy votes with the taxpayer’s money.

I listened to her - she made some good points, but true enough - Louisiana from at least Baton Rouge south to the Gulf has always dealt with flooding and high water. If you still live there, then make sure all the holes in your boat are plugged.

Come out of the DARK, Mary - leave these evil Leftie Satanists and come to the LIGHT ....

A lot of folks scoffed around here when they redrew the Flood Plain and greatly expanded the number of homes and businesses affected.

Well, we had a 100 year rain this spring, exactly 100 years to-the-day since, that hit new highs in flooding. For once, they were right.

Our problem is not Glo-bull Warming, it’s the fact that our local farmland is better drained than ever before, and that water hits the major waterways a lot faster.

Election time, and Ms Landrieu is (one suspects) faking indignation to build cred among the most-easily-fooled segment of the voters.

Mary sees her Senate seat going bye-bye, so she’s pretending she is not a lib.

FEMA’s maps are screwed up.

As for a “100 year flood plain”, that means there is a 1 in 100 chance it will flood every year. There can be flooding 3 years in a row in a hundred year flood plain. But I’m sure you knew this.

All flood insurance should be privately purchased. Maybe some exceptions for when the government builds dams or dikes that may create flooding in areas that would not flood but for the dams or dikes.

both her and her GOP counterpart are supporting a bill that would delay the premium increases

usually in these cases, in order to keep the reserves where they need to be, these delays wind up necessitating even bigger increases when the delay expires - lower premiums now mean less reserves and less earnings on the reserves during the delay, which can only be made up by even higher premiums for a a time to make up the difference and the lost time (time = money when counting the earnings on an investment pool)

its an election year

just like all the expensive “compromises” in the farm bill, everyone wants something to convince their constituents that they brought home the bacon

yes, I was just noting that it was exactly 100 years since the last flood of this magnitude occured here.

Quite a coinky-dink, wouldn’t you say?
