South struggles back to normal as officials point fingers after snowstorm
US News-NBC News Online ^ | 1/30/2014 | Erin McClam and Alexander Smith

Still littered with abandoned cars, Atlanta struggled to find its way back to normal Thursday while the mayor and governor struggled with the political fallout from a snowstorm that trapped some people in their cars more than 24 hours.

Mayor Kasim Reed assured people on Tuesday, in a message on Twitter before the snow began to fall: “Atlanta, we are ready for the snow.”

On Thursday, he acknowledged that authorities made a mistake by not staggering their orders for people to go home — schools first, then private businesses, then government employees. Instead, hundreds of thousands of people poured onto the interstates at the same time.

But Reed suggested, in a pair of interviews on NBC’s TODAY and MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” that he was being unfairly blamed for traffic that clogged highways outside the city limits.

“I think we need to work much harder on coordination,” he said on MSNBC. But he stressed: “The highways are not the responsibility of the city.”

It was the latest episode of finger-pointing after the storm. On Wednesday, Gov. Nathan Deal infuriated meteorologists by calling the storm “unexpected” and saying that nobody “could have predicted “the degree and magnitude of the problem.”

In fact, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm alert for Atlanta at 3:38 a.m. on Tuesday, 12 hours before the worst of the traffic set in.

If this were Chicago, where I'm from, this guy would have been tossed on his ear vis a vis Michael Bilandic style.

Will be interesting to see how he fairs, but considering that he's a black mayor, any criticsm except from another black will be considered racial.

I'm currently in LaGrange, GA. Everyone knew of the snow coming. Schools and companies closed quickly. These buffoons in Atlanta had the equipment and did not proreact.

Complete incompetence. In fact, the guy was holding press conferences, and still is, saying everything was in order and control.

Atlanta, The City, like New Orleans, That Doesn't Work, But Know One Will Ever Know Will They?

Unless the criticism comes from an ‘Uncle Tom’.

global warming is the biggest lie ever told. this is the coldest year ever :Snow in new Orleans , snow in Pensacola, snow in Atlanta, snow in Egypt this year. factories have been emitting C02 for the past 200 years. This CO2 is what democrats say is trapping heat in the atmosphere causing global warming. if that were true then sea levels would have risen 60 feet in those 200 years. They haven’t .there is MORE ice than ever in Antarctica( google it) not less. It’s hasn’t warmed. there is no sea level rise, ice caps have not melted.global warming is a big lie democrats push to grow government and control us (socialism).

democrats are pure evil. democrats are socialists, all of them

I will always continue to fight for freedom and for smaller, almost nonexistent just constitutional government: I am a Republican

I’m in north Georgia and was relieved that the forecast was for the snow to stay below Atlanta. If the forecast changed Tuesday morning the local weather channels had a well kept secret.

It’s called winter.

People who always look to blame someomne else for their own misfortune need to consider their own lack of foresight, lack of preparation and failure to use their own brains to evaluate a situation.

When people rely on the government to do their thinking for them and things go wrong it isn’t a failure of government, it’s a failure of the individual to accept responsibility for their own life.

It’s Obama’s fault, just like Katrina was Bush’s fault.

Global Warming has morphed into “Climate Change,” which can cause anything.

The problem is media.
In the old days everybody just soldiered on.
Now it’s a 24/7 crisis that demands government to help us all.

“an inch of snow and everyone goes to pieces”

You can thank the “crisis media” for that.

I’m surprised they didn’t name this little event, their good for doing that lately.

Why the hell hasn’t Obama called out FEMA? What is he going to do about these people in the streets? Does he not care about black people?

Honestly, why isn’t this being hung around Obama’s neck like they tried to do with Katrina around Bush’s?

yep... on it’s face “Climate Change” is ludicrous. Do they even think about the term they are using? Do they know the history of ice ages and warming this planet had, before industrialization? It can not, in the large part, be controled.

wow... can’t have change a in climate.. what a joke. I’m tired of listening to these people talk, and for the most part I never do. I tuned out Zero at the beginning, I knew him to be a sham from the very beginning...

now we are going to have another 3 years of listening to the Clintons, running up to 2016.

Georgia - Republican governor.

Looks like Chris Christie will need to give the Gov, some lessons on sucking up.

2 1/2 inches of snow and people get stuck? This is not the government’s fault.

I heard a guy talking on the radio this morning. He said he used to believe in Global Warming, but doesn't any more, after he heard that the sun just went thru a polar shift, which is more than likely responsible for the cold weather.

I'd be willing to bet that a good amount of the problems in Atlanta stemmed from people with 4 wheel drive SUV's who thought they could go anywhere. They can't, in fact they are downright dangerous on ice.
