School officials in the US state of Utah have apologised after an employee confiscated and discarded the lunches of about 30 children whose parents were said to be in arrears on meal payments.
Outraged parents in Salt Lake City said the students at Uintah Elementary primary school had been humiliated.
The school system has launched an inquiry into the Tuesday incident, blamed on a sole "nutrition manager".
The children whose meals were put in the rubbish were given fruit and milk.
"This was a mistake. This was handled wrong,'' Jason Olsen, a spokesman for the Salt Lake City school system said on Thursday.
According to Salt Lake City school officials, on Monday a nutrition manager arrived at Uintah Elementary to investigate what it described as a high number of negative balances on the accounts students use to pay for lunches prepared and served by the school.
The nutrition manager and another school employee began calling parents with negative balances in an effort to recoup payment, the school system said.
Then, on Tuesday, students who had queued up and were served lunch only to arrive at the tills and show negative balances were told to give back the lunches.

Moochelle's 'diet' plan is really working and so is Obama's.
Taking food out of the mouths of children
and jobs out of the economy.
You gotta fire people who are so stupid as this. There is no fix for these idiots.
Ya can’t fire everybody.. or can you?
Schools in other states have taken similar actions. In the last year, students in Massachusetts, Indiana, Maine and Kentucky had lunches taken from them and discarded.
I can.... :)
I read the article, and I do recall the name of the “school official” responsible for this. This person should be “outed,” fired, and publicly scorned.
The other aspect is we didn't have the Mooshel gestapo telling us what we could bring for lunch. :)
When I was a kid you had to offer up the change to get the meal. No credit offered. But that was back in the days when America was the world’s largest creditor nation.
Eating on credit? This will be a significant lesson to children of the world’s largest debtor nation: that if you can’t pay your bill you can collectively complain and get what you want from those who pay their way. Moochocracy in action.
nutrition manager? ....oh boy
And nine times out of ten the nutrition manager is some female who’s wearing a pair of black stretch pants that say size “cow” on the inside label.
dark times if this happens in Utah....
What’s the Soup Nazi’s opinion?
My kids school offers sack lunch for kids who don’t have lunch money.
It is impossible (imo) for the liberal insanity to be totally covered.
I haven't read the story, but our board would fire anyone involved ... there are too many good people looking for secure school jobs to keep assholes.
I'm sorry, it'll never happen again is not acceptable.
“It was simpler when I was a kid. You went through the cafeteria line and you paid the lady ,,,”
That’s so outdated. You probably also think the schools shouldn’t provide breakfast and dinner too and that the parents should be forced to do that,,,,/
Good for the school, but they shouldn’t have given them anything!
You get to be a nutrition manager when they’ve hired you to be a cook... and your cooking is so lousy they gotta find something else for you to do. Because they can’t fire ya :)
“nutrition manager”
Let me see, denying a minor a proper meal...well, to me that is child abuse and the nutrition manager would be a manager of the garbage containers in state prison.
Meanwhile, when I attended school in the dark ages of the 50’s, we brought our lunch and paid for supplemental things like milk and or ice cream. Moochele would have a coronary if she saw my sandwiches: salami or bologna but Tuna on Friday. I was also fed before leaving the house, it was called breakfast which my mom prepared before she went to work.
These are government workers. They are not expected to give rational or logical thought to their actions, just follow protocol, process, procedure and orders. It would be an outrage if a government worker were to actually MANAGE a situation proactively with logic based solutions specific to a circumstance.
