This is a Google translated version. It seems Putin has plans after the Olympics just like he did for North Ossetia. Putin plans to assimilate Russian speaking border regions back into Russia.

If this is true, this is the exact same game plan they played with Georgia. They attacked during the Olympics, under the pretext of defending the Russian population from attacks which the Russkies themselves provoked. If this is true, this is very scary, and I fear not just for the people of Ukraine, but for the whole world.

I guess we’ll see what happens pretty soon.

“Nedogosudarstvom”?

That would probably be much easier to read (and pronounce) in Cyrillic! ;)

WOW!

I guess we should take back Cuba, our old colony, right?

After all, we tried to get them on the independence track and Fidel shat all over that.

There are lots of Ukranians, but the idea of a state within the present borders of Ukraine is a modern fantasy, specifically, a Stalinist one.

Eastern Ukraine is essentially Russian already. It could only separate at a time of maximal Russian weakness, such as occurred in 1991-94.

Western Ukraine is not Russian (not at all Russian), but historically it has always existed as a province of a larger state such as Austria or Poland.

If the EU political model were viable, the Western Ukraine could separate and become an EU member (without Kiev), but it is not.

The long-term answer is a German-Russian expansion that will again engulf the small states into some sort of dependency (TBD), probably with actual unification of Eastern Ukraine + Belarus with Russia.

I thought Putin was a good guy, a conservative who knew how to handle himself. Isn’t that the play he’s getting in some quarters of FR?

I just read an article that purports Putin is now preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Is it not true?
