A Possible First: Lawsuit Over Birds Stops Federal Wind Energy Project

This is well outside California, but it may well have ramifications in the Golden State: A lawsuit threatened by a pair of bird conservation groups has halted a wind power development the federal government had planned along the Lake Erie shore in Ohio.

**SNIP**

"We are absolutely elated that the Air National Guard has halted this project, at least temporarily and possibly for good," said BSBO Executive Director Kimberly Kaufman, adding that BSBO would continue to gather petition signatures despite the ANG's decision. "We want to document the full extent of the opposition to this -- and similar projects in this area -- in the event the project is reconsidered in the future," said Kaufman.

"This is a big win for the vast numbers of birds that migrate through the Camp Perry area, which have been using these routes and stopover habitats for centuries," said Kenn Kaufman, an author of extremely popular bird and wildlife books who lives near Camp Perry. "Let's hope that the suspension is a permanent one."

Or we could make bio fuel out of liberals. A high temperature filtration process and then steam cracking. They want to save the environment? Here’s their chance.

this country is so nutty that killing birds is more important news than the killing of millions of innocents via abortions

My two sons went to the South shore of Erie a few Springs ago. Can’t remember the name of the park, Think Crane Creek, near Toledo.
It’s a major flyway for warblers heading North into Canada (and nesting).

The birds, some of which have flown all the way from Central and South America, congregate on the south shore waiting for good weather to cross Lake Erie.
There are so many tired birds you can almost touch them.

The thought of erecting windmills and all the destruction they cause to birds is abhorrent.

Not to worry. President Hussein will wave his magic dictator’s wand and give them a pass to fricassée just as many protected birds as the ecomills can snare. Heck, we doan need no stinkin boids anyways, cause gren energy is most importants.

The very idea that the "conservation" groups didn't back off on wind as an alternative energy source is reprehensible. Once the effect it is having on bird migrations and endangered species became known, it should've been the end of the very bad idea.

There are other factors. One is that small initial environmental changes can lead to even greater changes they cause. Can large wind farms affect climate? Probably. Can the lack of birds create other populations they live off to increase? Problably.

It's just too weird to me that supposed pro-environment activists would abandon their principles so easily, out of political correctness.

Especially since Clinton, a democrat, shut down most the federal and state forests in Wa, OR and CA to save the Spotted owl. The population of the Spotted owl is the same even shrinking due to its new predator the Bard owl after 20 years.

Meanwhile due to "saving the birds" our number one export, from our small rural counties that have been managing our forests for a hundred years, is our children.
