Utah school district apologizes for seizing kids' lunches for unpaid bills

One of Utah's biggest school systems apologized Thursday and told angry parents it was investigating why dozens of elementary school children had their lunches seized and thrown away when they didn't have enough money in their accounts.

"This was a mistake," said Jason Olsen, a spokesman for the Salt Lake School District. "There shouldn't have been food taken away from these students once they went through that line."

The district came under national criticism after as many as 40 kids were given fruit and milk and their real lunches were thrown away Tuesday at Uintah Elementary in Salt Lake City.

I agree completely. It was a waste of food/money/resources and it was stupid and unkind.

I just can’t imagine how an adult could think...oh yeah, those kid’s parents haven’t funded their lunch. I’m going to go over and show those kids they can’t be moochers. Seriously, who blames the child for the parent’s errors?

Another interesting angle to this story .... The prices of school lunches have increased because of FLOTUS’s decrees.

Remember - if the kids are expected to pay - it means their parents work and don’t qualify for free lunch.
So - the kids who have working parents are getting this treatment while other kids are breezing right through.
No money? No problem! HEY YOU OVER THERE! Give those tater tots back NOW!

So if you get to the cashier, and you don’t have enough money to pay, the store needs to ‘sell’ it to you anyways because the alternative is to damage your self-esteem?

Dan! I need to go buy a Mercedes with the $5 in my pocket!

“I fail to see how taking a kid’s lunch and throwing it away would not be labelled bullying (the most serious crisis facing our nation, they say) if done by another kid.”

Well, if kid A’s lunch actually belonged to kid B, then having kid B take it away is not bullying. Does that help?

Good grief! Even folks on FR are starting to welcome freeloaders and unpaid-for entitlements!

The father of student was interviewed this morning. He noted that the school has multiple phone #s on file for him and have used them to notify him of situations such as tardyness. Why wasn’t he called re the lunch account? Poor communications.

Well if it makes you feel better being a dick to kids because it get some “conservative” point across, then by all means snatch it from the leaches after it was given to them and toss it in the garbage.

Either way money was wasted, but the kids got the business end of the “correction”, even though they had nothing to do with the whole screw-up from either end.

The poor little tykes learned a lesson in life - don’t go to the cash register and expect to walk away with unpaid goods.

If expecting people to pay for what they take makes me a dick, then I’m a dick and glad of it. Most of the stores in America are run by dicks, as are most of the businesses.

What things do you own that I can come take without paying for them?

One good thing that will come of this...these kids when they are adults will pay their bills on time...

Since 40 kids had their lunches taken away en-mass...someone had a little Nazi like power moment...

That someone should never be allowed to have that type of power again...

These kids may or may not learn that lesson.
There is another lesson being taught in that lunchroom because a large group of kids who aren’t expected to pay at all.
There is no expectation from them - or their parents - that they should contribute one dime towards their food.
These kids will never have their lunches thrown away, nor will they ever be given only fruit and milk.
No phone calls home - no bill - no worries!

I wonder what those kids are thinking when their classmates get in trouble for falling behind.

It was a stupid decision and a waste of food. What did it accomplish other than embarrassing the kids. When my kids were in school and kids owed money, they were given a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and milk. All the taxpayer money sent to other countries every year and people are gonna complaining about kids’ lunches? Really?

Get a life.

Yup, and the kids here were given fruit and milk...they were not denied food.

Pay your bills is a good lesson for kids to learn.

These kids didnt learn anything. The transaction wasn’t theirs to handle. They just got the lunch like they did on the other days. The parents are supposed to pay, and the school is supposed to keep accurate track of this before the food is passed out.

I swear sometimes I think some people on our side just gets off on stuff like this, like the left loves when a kid’s lemonade stand gets shut down by some government hack.

Those kids have nothing to do with the situation.

It was their lunch, so they had everything to do with the situation.

I'm no more for a kid being humiliated or going hungry than the next person, but my daughters were taught before they started school that it was their responsibility to see to it they ate that day at school......either by taking something or making sure they had enough in the account (even if it just meant coming home and telling me the number) to cover it.

What happened to the conservative idea of taking personal responsibility for yourself? WHY did the parents not explain to these kids the simplistic fact that, on a school-day, that they have to eat just like they do every OTHER day? Even a 5 year old could understand it (IF it was bothered to be explained to them).

Maybe if society would start teaching responsibility from day one instead of all this hand-holding, American kids would be adults instead of existing in perpetual adolescence.

----

Sorry if it seems I'm grousing at you, personally. I'm really not. It's just that all this tooth-gnashing by the adults and political posturing by lawmakers over what happened is just beyond ridiculous, IMO.

At the same time, the schools prohibit lunches being brought from home.

Might contain something with peanuts or bologna or nachos or something else the school is trying to police and keep away.

“These kids didnt learn anything.”

If they didn’t, it is because they are stupid. How bright do you have to be to figure out you cannot pass the cash register without paying?

Of course, they are NOW learning that they are ENTITLED to take stuff from others. PAYING is for fools. Just complain loud enough, shed a tear, and the people who want you to pay for goods received will back down.

Hope they try that out at a used car dealership...

Heck, by the 5th grade, why can’t they make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for themselves? But this is Modern America, so now we need to teach them they DESERVE an EBT card (”the safe and easy way for you to buy your WIC foods.”)...
