Wal-Mart stores and its Sam's Club chain are apparently hurting from the cuts in the federal food stamp program that went into effect in early November.
The impact from the government's reduction in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits had a much greater effect on the world's largest retailer than originally expected by the company. Combined with consumer fears about the economy and winter storms that also hurt store business nationwide, the cuts made a bad situation for Wal-Mart even worse, according to a statement from Wal-Mart Chief Financial Officer Charles Holley carried by the Associated Press.
The estimated $5 billion cut from the program dragged down store sales over the Christmas period, more than offsetting the usual bump from the holiday season during the fiscal fourth quarter.
Noting that about 20 percent of Wal-Mart shoppers use food stamps, Morningstar financial analyst Ken Perkins told Reuters, "Wal-Mart caters to lower-income consumers which have been hit disproportionately hard relative to higher-income consumer."(continued)

I guess if I read you correctly, you are just a garden variety Marxist. You like Walmart and hate those who don’t. The matter of freedom to choose where one shops isn’t something that you relate to, huh!
The fools don't have enough common sense to look at their data and say "Hey Item number ########### isn't selling but a few days a month" then look at their inventory on hand for same period to see if it's an inventory issue. I bet their computer shows in stock. In contrast let's day an Ingles store the manager and a few key persons make sure items are there and plenty more in the storerooms. Sales mean profits. No inventory? No Sales.
Any say in the on hand inventory is out of the local managers hands. When Bentonville says ship onlt then is an item shipped to the store for stocking it seems. Every aspect of Walmart is managed in Bentonville. Store Managers know they can turn bigger sales and profits per store. But Bentonville says no.
Bentonville believes it is making more money rationing out products like denture adhesive, Glad Food Storage Containers, Potato chips, and paper towels, rather than selling them as many as possible. You can go into several Walmarts in a given area with a shopping list and every one will likely be sold out. The truck arrives next week though with a few more items. It is not the store Sam built nor how he built it. Using current inventory policies Sam would have went broke. They ran off competition and now believe customers are at their mercy I guess.
You belong to a political forum and somehow have managed to not know that the store you hate is hated by the left?
You don’t read newspapers, magazines, see TV, cable, you never noticed that Walmart is under constant attack from the left, as their non-unionized, gun selling icon of capitalist evil?
When you learn that many of the major cities in America won’t allow them to sell groceries within their city limits, you never wondered how that is possible in America, or why?
If you are going to put a hate on Walmart grocery stores, learn who your allies are.
The truth is many who are disabled will draw the lowest help aside from SSDI and Medicare. Between my own disability and my wife we draw $1500 a month combined. She has extensive extra needs of which a considerable portion we pay out of pocket. We are not eligible for food stamps or SSI but we are on medicaid.
If I didn't have VA help for issues such as Hearing Aids and corrective insoles we'd really be in trouble. Those are cost Medicare or Medicaid does not cover.
As for your statement? I worked full time and was a caregiver at home full time. Burning both ends of the candle likely speeded up my disability but it was still going to happen though.
Last night just trying to enjoy our once a month eating out at a family restaurant and then doing the monthly shopping afterward was a huge reminder to me of why I can't work. The noise was agitating me big time.
Even after Katrina I wasn’t allowed to draw food stamps. They as much as told me that middle aged white men PAY for food stamps, they don’t get them.
Well in my case I have been spending more of my food stamps at Aldi’s because of the good holiday sales. And the fact I had doctors appointments in that town where the store is located.
We have a grocery store, Super W-M, Dollar General, a food service outlet store and a discount grocery store.
A good chunk of the $189 goes to the grocery store for meat when on sale and a few other sale items. Otherwise it costs too much there and I despise the dirty old man that owns the store.
I mostly get gallons of water, jarred and canned items, and not much meat at W-M.
I pick up stuff occasionally at the other stores.

I was very firm about the fact that I like Walmart as an enterprise, it’s a world-class success story! That I don’t shop there very often has nothing to do with that fact. I stated it several times in previous posts, but you regress to the fact that I don’t shop there routinely because I hate Walmart. I think it’s disgrace of the first order that some RAT-run cities try their best to manipulate their laws to exclude Walmart. I do think, and it’s a problem with other “big box” stores as well, that they tend to drive the smaller entities out of business. But that’s what capitalism is all about. And I still believe that it was a stupid move for Walmart to complain about the cuts to food stamps. It said to me that they are unhappy that the government won’t help to feed them customers using tax dollars.
The other nagging issue with all of the “big box” stores is their love affair with China, and the fact that in some instances, they bring foodstuffs to their businesses that are not wholesome. I just returned some “Made in China” canned fruit because we had concerns about what was really in the cans. The Chinese had no problem adulterating dog food a couple of years ago and people here lost their pets. That was unacceptable, and as a consequence, we aren’t taking any chances, because there is a US-grown alternative that is a lot more likely to be produced with the idea that it’s for human consumption and needs to be free from adulteration.

For some products (like pasta), I can’t even see a difference. For others, I’ll sacrifice taste for price, but it has to be edible.
I’ve never used any of their pharmaceuticals (I don’t even use Tylenol); interesting that the family in Europe likes them.
I’d give their soups a try; the canned fruit is fine. Funny about the camo hat; they had a bunch of “Duck Dynasty” stuff in the discount aisle (not really a prime place to sell it where I live; lots of minorities shopping there).

I didn’t realize that; in my area our A&Ps and Pathmarks are closed already. North Jersey is turning into a “bodega or Wal-Mart” economy; it is still easy to buy “loosies” (individual cigarettes), and in my area a sample of 11 liquor stores (many owned by foreigners) turned up 3 that proofed minors trying to buy alcohol. Western civilization is disappearing here...
I can get pretty bad headaches; they really do work better than “Tylenol”, for me anyways.

I’ve had neighbors that would ship certain toiletries to family in Portugal; apparently they can’t get certain brands there.
I’m probably five miles southwest of where the game was played, and with the exception of banner planes, helicopters, and spotlights in the sky in the distance you would never have known it was being played there. I pity anyone waiting for a flight out of Newark today (the closest airport to the stadium). NJ got nothing but overtime/security bills for this game; I doubt there will be another one here (it was a concession for building the new stadium, as Dallas had). You can’t be telling people a week before the game that it might have to be played on a different DAY because of the weather (think of the hotel and flight reservations); I wish the storm we have now came yesterday if just to make the game more memorable. The fans weren’t thrilled about the transportation, and the ticket and hotel prices fell a lot leading up to the game; they tried to blame the weather, but the fact is that this area has severe economic problems (and illegal Hispanics don’t care about American football - despite the NFL’s outreach to them). The fact that they wouldn’t let people walk to the game (while they certainly could safely from neighborhoods to the west) was a disgrace - it really said it all. Just a scam, and not worth the hassle. The game itself stunk; I feel bad for Manning but am OK with the NFC winning another Super Bowl.

The game REALLY stunk - bad. I’m tired of the Manning worship in the media and was happy Pete Carroll won - he was treated like crap when NEW fired him.
I prefer Eli to Payton, but Peyton was great in his prime while Eli only had flashes of greatness (at the right times).
TV’s diversity-fest was disgusting; if the weather was better I’d have been happy hiking (or doing just about anything else). I only make a point to watch the game if the Giants are in it; otherwise I truly couldn’t care less (I wasn’t rooting for either team yesterday). NJ simply proved it wasn’t up to hosting it.
Eli shines on the biggest stage (SB); Peyton melts on it.
I skipped the ads; I switched to “Walking Dead” repeats, but, yeah, the ads were a crapfest from everything I’ve read (minus the Budweiser/puppy ad).
But overall, I agree - if the weather was better I’d have been happy doing just about anything else.
Why doesn’t Obama just give every American 250,000 dollars in food stamps and get Wal-Mart and the US moving again? O’boy NSA will probably see this and pass it on up to the prez thinking it a great idea.

If you live in NJ, you either do Wegman’s/Whole Foods or Wal Mart if you are in the other end of the social bell curve. Not much choice in Kearny, I’m afraid (my friends who live there stop in Edgewater on th way home from work to shop).
