Al Qaeda in Syria kills rival rebel leader

BEIRUT - Al Qaeda fighters killed the leader of a rival Islamic brigade in a twin car bombing near Syria's northern city of Aleppo, an attack likely to further exacerbate rebel infighting in the country's brutal civil war even as government forces continued their intense shelling of opposition-held areas of the city on Sunday.

The attack targeted the base of rivals, the Tawheed Brigades, and killed commander Adnan Bakkour, said Rami Abdurrahman of the Observatory.

The al Qaeda linked Islamic State also killed another prominent commander of another rebel brigade, said analyst Charles Lister of the Brookings Doha Center.

Lister said the extremists killed Abu Hussein al-Dik of the powerful Suqour al-Sham, showing that the Islamic State was targeting key headquarters, "strategic checkpoints and senior influential commanders."

They have the "hamzeens"--that is, 50 days during the winter the winds blow from the north. The entire country is DUST from thousands of feet up to sea level. Visibility is ZERO for some three days at a time. NO ONE drives outside.

This is a recipe for silicosis. How did you deal with it while in-country?

Sounds like you’re describing HELL!...I went to Iraq and I thought that was Hell. Maybe they are just sections of a larger overall area!

We stayed indoors ALL THE TIME with their BODACIOUS A.C.
Each home had TWO huge A.C. units so if ONE broke down there was a second one to kick on. We kept our car windows rolled up with the A.C. on full blast.
We did play golf, but we played early in the morning and the golf course was not in the direction of ANY wind blowing toward it. The fumes never bothered us on the golf course (all sand and we carried a little square of green plastic "grass" to hit off of).
ARAMCO and the Saudis had more money than God.

I did play some slow pitch softball for a while. It was at night, when it was SLIGHTLY less hot but we all suffered with the air, so I did give it up.
We also traveled A LOT. We saw all the places we KNEW we'd never get to from home/USA. It was our adventure of a lifetime. We came home after five years...it was time and we SURE missed the good ole USA, the BEST country in the world!!

They are sections of a larger overall area: the middle east. What a place. We made a PILE of money from ARAMCO but five years was WAY enough. We wanted home, home, home.
I came to believe that if children survived all that middle east-ness, NOTHING short of a silver bullet would kill them.

The Saudis didn't live long lives. If you THOUGHT a guy "looked" 45 years old, he was probably only 30 years old. It ages people quickly and not in a good way.

Thank you for serving.
