I don’t think it’s an effective commercial. It fails to tie the cause (skipping school) with the effect (being blown to bits in your friends’ faces). But it was fun to watch, in a morbid way.
I owe my dear FRiend Lazamataz for being the first to turn me on to this...One truly sick individual, of many I’ve met online. Nobody told me the web would be so twisted.

It certainly wouldn’t have been effective with me as a kid for the fact that there were no military installations nearby when I was a kid.
Getting bitten by a muskrat or tripping over a barbed wire fence just wouldn’t have scared me much.

A little dramatic but I understand the sentiment. My older boy was killed by a rocket propelled grenade in Iraq. Not so messy but I didn’t really study the autopsy report that well. Closed casket was enough.

Dittos on the gunnery ranges. But I had the same terrain as you, about 15-20 miles (maybe) away from your equally misspent youth. Frankly, I was in much more danger of blowing my foot off with a shotgun while shooting at a frog.

If school was in session it was still too cold for “intentional” swimming.

Just like horror movies...it’s always the drunks, druggies, irresponsible, and moraly lacking that get killed first.

I can’t begin to describe how much trouble school kept us out of. And we didn’t even have streets to keep us off of. I remember those days of “How do we keep you kids out of the streets?”
Hell, give us enough plinking ammo (and something to shoot at) and you won’t see us for months!

If I was cynical, I’d say that logic would not be the most logical way to reach slackers, while blowing them up when they are almost naked and about to get laid would emotionally stick through psychic trauma - and so be an extremely logical strategy.
