Some pizza delivery drivers arming themselves

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) – Bill Bruton spent Super Bowl Sunday delivering pizzas all over Indianapolis for Aunt Polly’s Pizza. But when Bruton hits the road to make a delivery, he’s carrying more than a pizza. He’s also carrying a gun.

“I’ve got a lifetime permit and I carry,” he said.

The manager at Aunt Polly’s said their drivers have carried for years.

“As long as they have gun permits,” said manager Jeff White.

Not everyone allows their employees to carry weapons. But restaurants are reviewing their safety policies after two pizza delivery drivers were shot and killed in Indianapolis in two weeks.

“We took it real seriously,” said James Hines, a spokesperson for Pizza Hut.

The shootings didn’t involve Pizza Hut employees, but the chain did call its locations in Indianapolis to stress the importance of doing everything possible to stay safe.

“We’ve coached every store – every employee on driver safety and different steps we can take internally to make sure our number one priority is the safety of our team members,” said Hines.

Some of those steps including making sure drivers lock their doors, carry no more than $20 cash at a time, and have a valid call-back number to call customers and confirm the order.

Hines also said customers should turn lights on and make sure the delivery location is in a place that can be seen by others.

“If they’re willing to make sure they have a porch light on, and they’re willing to give us a good phone number that our driver can call once they’re at that location to verify the delivery, then we’re fine, but we just won’t send somebody to an unknown location out of public view,” he said.

Bruton said carrying a gun gives him some peace of mind.

“It just kind of helps you even the odds up a little bit,” he said, but added a gun won’t automatically keep him safe.

He said the most important thing to do is to always be aware of his surroundings.

“You’ve got to be ultra vigilant,” he said.

Aunt Polly’s “okay to carry” policy saved one driver’s life, a few years back:

There have been other food delivery guys murdered over the years. These people are very vulnerable to assault. They get called to any old place, they carry cash (not a lot, but some people are crazy). My daughter wanted to do this when she was in HS, but I wouldn’t let her.

A friend of a friend of mine back in college was murdered on a delivery run. He was set up by a couple of townies who robbed and shot him. The poor guy was in his last semester of school, too. Makes me angry to this day.

In Indy the perps are most certainly urban thugs.

Just common sense, IMO — there’s no way I’d do that without carrying. Getting dead over a large supreme and a $20 change fund is unacceptable.

Good for that business to allow carry

Contrary to what Business Socialists say, and those BSoc here on FR, no business has the right to deny your Second Amendment rights while working for them...especially if it requires handling money. Folks get killed when businesses deny 2d Amendment rights

But how can this be? According to all democrats, most republicans and of course president dog turd if you're disarmed it's good for you. Their talking point being the more helpless you are the safer you are.

Packing heat for $7 an hour? Not worth it.

What about a whistle that you can blow real loudly when someone is about to shoot you?

BTW, a driver should ALWAYS carry legally if they think they will ever be fearful for their life making a delivery.
Far better to be fired from a crappy pizza delivery job for violating some stupid anti-self-defense rule established by a corporate czar in a high tower surrounded by armed bodyguards than being permanently fired from your life by a lowlife killer.
