My dad had an old Ford pick up he parked at the lake...for haulin wood, and driving to fishing holes....poor thing “had cancer” (rust due to salt from hard winters)...a few chewed up spots from mice using it for their personal condo...but that baby would chug along just fine. Hell, that was the highlight of the trips to the lake for the young lads....seeing if one of them could get it to start without flooding the engine ...but MOM had to drive it, because I did not have the patience to teach underage boys how to drive a standard transmission—hell, their feet couldnt hit the gas, let alone the clutch!

Yeah, that brings back another memory.
When you could actually place a down payment and
have one built for you: interior color; exterior color;
engine; and pick-and-choose your options.
Before efficiencies pushed them to only offer “packages”.

ANother fond memory was bewing on active duty, and you could order your custom car from Detroit and pay just abit above the cost to build it.....my first EVER brand new car was a 76 metallic blue MonteCarlo....I had the car exactly 2 months, and I got orders overseas .....so had my uncle sell it.

I still remember Old man Boyd that ran the dealership.
You could sit with the brochure and pick out what you wanted,
pay him 10% down so he was pretty sure it was sold as soon as it came in.

If it was something particularly hideous in his mind,
he would make you put more money down, so he would be more
sure that he didn’t get stuck trying to sell some monstrosity.

The typical buyer was low-mid income; the typical car was a Cadillac.
