Experts warn of 'Chernobyl' risk at Yongbyon nuclear plant

Sebastien Falletti, Seoul - IHS Jane's Defence Weekly

26 January 2014

North Korea's decision to restart its 5 megawatt electric (MWe) reactor at the Yongbyon nuclear scientific research complex threatens Northeast Asia with a disaster potentially worse than Chernobyl, according to nuclear experts.

"This reactor comes from another world. The Yongbyon site has a concentration of so many nuclear facilities that if there was a fire in one building it could lead to a disaster worse than the Ukrainian one," said Seo Kyun Reul, a professor at the nucleonic department of Seoul National University.

Yongbyon's 5 MWe reactor uses obsolete magnox technology that, combined with the reuse of old graphite moderators, greatly increases the risk of a fire, Seo said.

When this plant ‘goes’....watch Chinese folks suddenly get all peppy and directing stupid questions at their own leadership for letting North Korea get this stupid. There will be a rapid turnover of several Chinese leaders, and hostility brewing for years over choices made.

Prevailing winds:
Winter - South and East
Summer - North and West

Of course, the jet stream is always going East.

A cook off ant Yongbyon on a Chernobyl scale would decimate almost all of the North Korean population. The exclusion area at Chernobyl is about 2/3 the size of NK.

The SK population would also have serious effects. Seoul might have to be abandoned.

Japan would just have to live with high radiation levels, the U.S. would be effected to a lesser extent.

China? Hard to say. If the winds were just right when it first happened, Beijing could get a heavy dose of North Korean radiation.

Usually, with NK, by the time these things make the media, it isn’t speculation anymore.

They’re probably storing spent rods next to the reactor like the Fukushima site in Japan (Fukushima had rods on top of the reactors because they couldn’t decide where to store them long term). Idiots!

No, that type of risk is very exaggerated.

But it is for sure used to produce plutonium, so it should not be restarted.

Do you think they've had an accident already?
