April Sniper Attack Knocked Out Substation, Raises Concern for Country's Power Grid

SAN JOSE, Calif.—The attack began just before 1 a.m. on April 16 last year, when someone slipped into an underground vault not far from a busy freeway and cut telephone cables.

Within half an hour, snipers opened fire on a nearby electrical substation. Shooting for 19 minutes, they surgically knocked out 17 giant transformers that funnel power to Silicon Valley. A minute before a police car arrived, the shooters disappeared into the night.

Can’t read it.

But the nations critical infrastructure is at high risk. Remember the big power outages we’ve had in the past? They were all causes by a minor disruption in one area that resulted in cascade failures over a much bigger area due to the protective capability built into the grid. Unlike EMP, an attack like the one the article presumably describes could be worked-around, but it would take time, and cause great disruption, and perhaps panic. Just think about how long a large city could go without any credit, debit, or EBT transactions and you’ll see what I mean.

They had some lame stream guy on FOX saying it could not have been a terror attack because they did not identify themselves as a terrorist group.
Well maybe it was a dry run
Maybe they were testing defenses
What we know for sure was they did this
they got away
they have not been caught.
And we dont know what they could have done if they had wanted to and what they may do next time
the most amazing thing is the CRICKET SOUND OF yawns from most of media...and this was almost a year ago.

Red Flag?

It was done by people knew what they were doing.

Information outside the industry was nil.

Information within the industry seemed to dance around it. On a side note within the industry, a intrusion in to a station to steal copper wire is a big deal, yet this was not given that much importance.

Put the title in your search engine. Often that link will let you read the story. Works with many sources.

Probing attack. Analogous air travel related dry runs were done before 9/11.

How does one get to the WSJ story without being a subscriber?

The WSJ pay wall is pretty soft. GOOGLE "WSJ California Assault"... and, you'll see a link where you can read the article.

Sorry.. I don't post that often... I was able to see the article from there.. Assumed it would show from here.

Thanks for posting the graphic.

I travel the world. One thing this travel has taught me? Russia and China are NOT our friends... especially, Russia. They absolutely WOULD, and WILL do something like this, on a larger scale... WHEN they think it suits their purpose.

We are, the weakest of paper tigers. Knock off our power? We take ourselves out of any global power game.
