The man who Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto tapped to head his newly formed Office of Management and Budget owes the Internal Revenue Service tens of thousands of dollars in back taxes, records show.

The mayor announced today that he was hiring Edward Kiely, who heads a consulting firm based in Pittsburgh, to lead the department, citing his extensive experience in helping businesses. Mr. Kiely was hired through Talent City, a foundation-backed initiative intended to take the politics out of hiring by using outside committees to cull top candidates for a position, giving the mayor the final word.

Mr. Kiely owes around $83,000 in federal taxes. He could not be reached for immediate comment, but the mayor's chief of staff Kevin Acklin said Mr. Kiely was forthcoming about the back taxes during the interview process.

Obviously this guy was chosen based on cronyism, not competency. I live in Pittsburgh, and I did not vote for this mayor.

“Mr. Kiely was forthcoming about the back taxes during the interview process.”

Which should make all Pittsburgh citizens sleep well at night knowing that the head of the OMB will be doing everything possible to protect its tax dollars from unscrupulous scheming government employees who are in debt and will resort to any means necessary to eliminate that debt.

Thats for damn sure. Back in the day when I was doing my own thing I got behind in my taxes about $4000. The IRS didnt waste anytime. They were all over me like a cheap suit threatening my bank account. Even though it was clearly an honest error they treated me like a criminal.

The IRS has not swarmed all over this guy? Does he belong to a protected party?

Maybe he used to work for Goldman Sachs. Or perhaps he is related to Jon Corzine.
