Filthy water in Winter Olympic residences.
Solzhenitsyn's "The Gulag Archipelago" | 5 February 2014 | OldNavyVet

Regarding the polluted, undrinkable water now reported at Russian residences where Winter Olympic athletes are staying, I’m reminded of the opening lines in the Preface of Solzhenitsyn’s “Gulag Archipelago.”

Those lines are … “In 1949 some friends and I came upon a newsworthy news item in Nature, a magazine of the Academy of Sciences. It reported in tiny type that in the course of excavations on the Kolyma River a subterranean ice lens had been discovered which was actually a frozen stream – and in it were found frozen specimens of prehistoric fauna some tens of thousands of years old. Whether fish or salamander, these were preserved in so fresh a state, the scientific correspondent reported, that those present immediately broke open the ice encasing the specimens and devoured them with relish on the spot. The magazine no doubt astonished its small audience with the news of how successfully the flesh of fish could be kept fresh in a frozen state. But few, indeed, among its readers were able to decipher the genuine and heroic meaning of this incautious report.”

Forget China, Japan. . .just look at the chlorine in tap water in the USA. People are affected by bathing in it, drinking it, washing clothes in it, and residue lingers on plates/silverware. Poor little babies and probably the unborn don’t have a chance unless under the safety of our Lord Jesus Christ.

ccurred to me that these are the people who by and large are cheerleading for Obamacare, and I realized it is rather perverse to be worrying about Soschi when people over here by the tens of thousands are losing the health coverage they were promised they could keep.

But they want Obamacare for OTHER people, not for themselves. Here, they they find THEMSELVES in the horrid circumstances.

I'm waiting for some of the athletes to leave Sochi in disgust & fear for their lives.

How does one bathe in water so discolored it is obviously heavily polluted? Disease & poisoning are a clear threat.

Who wants to sleep on bedding or wear clothing washed in this sludge, or eat food cooked in it?

If the water is so polluted, what else in Sochi could be a health threat to the athletes & spectators?

I am surprise that Putin, whose credibility is on the line, big time, allowed this mess to happen.

I can’t think of many places I’d go to and drink the local water. And that includes most of the US.

A local tv reporter said he visited Sochi and when he was there he saw only a couple of hotels and a handful of restaurants so while it has been a resort it has been a restricted resort for the party elite in the past. All the accomodations are essentially new and often not yet complete so its like walking into a construction site. Dirty water and other indignities are par for the course in construction in Russia I guess.

I don’t like the idea of gangs of feral dogs running around the streets day and night.

Who cleans up their poop?

My friends who went to China in 1980 were shocked to find out that the “Ladies Room” was a hole in the ground!
