‘Screw Canada’: Arrest of gun-toting American at Canadian border enrages U.S. firearms community

“Screw Canada.”

“Another reason not to venture to the dark north.”

Gun-related message boards lit up this week over news of the arrest of an American man at the Canadian border.

Retired U.S. Army sergeant major Louis DiNatale and his wife were on a romantic getaway from Kentucky to Vermont when they say their GPS led them astray to the border.

When DiNatale failed to declare a loaded handgun in the centre console — he says he simply forgot it was there — he was detained for four days and now faces gun-smuggling charges that could land him in prison for three years.

It could be true, but meaningless all the same. If it is, the reason would be the US has more people per capita living in rural areas than Canada, which has a few big cities but a vastly smaller population. If giving a choice, I would rather walk the streets of Montreal at 1am than any major city in the US.

Canada has a pretty low crime rate in most areas. I think much depends on definitions and how things are measured.

Certainly, for homicides, Canada numbers are much lower on average than those for the U.S.

Look at comparable cultural groups on both sides of the border and they have similar homicide rates.

do you know that he didn’t unload it and lock it in the trunk during his trip through NY? he was in Vermont at the time which is a no license, carry concealed or carry exposed state....

According to article:

After eight or nine hours on the road listening to Gospel music and having a good time, the couple wound up on the Thousand Islands Bridge for Canada.

The Thousand Island Bridge connects New York and Canada. In addition, the article states that he has retained a lawyer from Ottawa, which indicates that the arrest occurred in the Province of Ontario, which does not have a common border with Vermont.

Yes sir, 66% higher per capita. I am on my way to work or I would link the source. If you remind me tonight I’ll see if I can find that for you.

One of the responsibilities of handgun ownership is always to be cognizant of its location and condition. I would say that forgetting that you have one in your center console qualifies as a failure in that department.

This incident is another example of the need to bring back the legal principle of intent. Government (more correctly, those with government authority and power) seems to look for people who violated the law in a technical sense but without the intent on committing any crime. Government then grinds these people into the ground just to show the little people who is in charge.

Yeah my bad. Saw Vermont as the US destination and thought they made the wrong turn from there.

The communist takeover of the western hemisphere continues unabated.

Does it really matter who you vote for anymore? I think not.

I don't think that is how "unalienable" works.

If the majority of people in the U.S. wanted to eliminate the Second Amendment, would that be okay with you?
