SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Officials in California on Friday were set to outline proposed state legislation requiring smartphones and other mobile devices to have a "kill switch" that would render them inoperable if lost or stolen.

At some point, you would think manufacturers (or more of them) would simply quit selling products in CA. If they were smart, they’d just let the black market do it’s thing. From the auto manufacturers to firearms and now electronics technology, Californian’s should be working their way back toward the stone age. I suppose turning their state back into a natural desert is an impressive start.
Well, that should be helpful when the populace have to communicate with each other via Twitter or FB or the like when there are riots in the streets. They sure do a good job protecting us. Thank you, Homeland Security.
A lot of people think it would be impossible to throw a city into martial law and not have it get out; I posit that cutting the power/communications would be an excellent first-step in implementing such: you could even claim that it was a well organized terrorist attack

Winner winner, chicken dinner. Has nothing to do with protecting consumers and everything to do with giving government the keys. Just like making it illegal to root your own phone - can't have you putting in something that might interrupt their complete access to your phone.
There are loads of aftermarket packages that perform this function, there is no reason for it to be mandated other than to give government the option of wiping your phones. And like almost anything coming out of the Democrat legislature in California, more junk.
I found an I phone 4 or 5 last night that was numerically pass word protected.
There was no way to find access the system to call to find out the owner
Very bad idea....
And if you stop owning a cell they will force you to have one, ala mark of the beast.
Are automobiles next? Lots of them stolen.
.
Does it have the name of the carrier on it? The carrier will know.
Wait - a cell phone is the mark of the beast now???
I couldn’t get past the secure log in and turned it in to security
1) Place a message on the screen with a contact number.
2) Erase all data on the phone.
3) Use the phones GPS to see were it presently is.
On a side note, this option alone should be enough for California. However, they want the ability to disable your phone.
Stupid- there are plenty of free apps that do just that. I have one that will locate the phone, make it emit an ear-piercing screech and disable it, depending on what mood I’m in.
You're about 5 years too late.
“You’re about 5 years too late.”
The story of my life. :-)
.
Uh huh, this bill is just for theft. Right... As if you can’t call your carrier to have them disable the number. But, nooooo, let’s waste all this money and the legistature’s time on this it’s for the good of the people. Or.... maybe they’re lying that it’s really for the good of Big Brother.
That’s exactly why hussein ordered all new automobiles to have V2V and black boxes.
