Secret to Homemade Coke: Instant Cold, No Canisters

For a century, the executives of Coca-Cola Co. have done everything possible to put their famed cola "within arm's reach of desire," to the point that one chief executive frequently pondered an extra tap at the kitchen sink—with Coke flowing from it.

The company's plan to team up with the maker of the Keurig single-serve coffee brewers to develop a do-it-yourself countertop Coke machine comes pretty close.

The new cold drink machine won't look anything like SodaStream, the leading home soda maker, says Coke's new partner, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters Inc. It will have a similar design to Green Mountain's boxy coffee maker, and keep the Keurig name.

"You put a pod in, push a button, and get a drink," Brian Kelley, chief executive of Green Mountain said in an interview Thursday, one day after Coke said it will pay $1.25 billion for a 10% stake in its new partner.

“Fountain Coke” (Coca-Cola syrup + carbonated water) is what one gets at all kinds of places, including McDonald’s. It isn’t as highly carbonated as bottled Coke or Coke-in-a-can. I don’t want to have a fountain Coke dispenser at home.

How about a ‘fountain’ beer dispenser?

Coca cola syrup is very good for nausea, We used it years ago when sick to calm a stomach. Pharmacies used to have the syrup in prescription style bottles just for nausea.

I rarely drink soda anymore, but when I have an upset stomach, a coke is what I drink.

If you can't get the syrup, just use flat coke. That was Grandma's remedy.

That is so true. I have found over the years that nothing works quite as well.

When on a vacation in Leningrad (earlier and later, St. Petersburg) in 1991, I came ghastly ill after accidentally ingesting some tap water. I felt that just one Coke or Pepsi would give me relief, but, alas, none could be found in the neighborhood. I can remember just thinking about a cold cola drink. That's all I could think about.

***I came ghastly ill after accidentally ingesting some tap water.***

Years ago the US news media had a program on Leningrad water. It seems the commies installed the tap water intake downstream from the sewer outlets.
