"The researchers said the humans who left the footprints may have been related to Homo antecessor, or "pioneer man," whose fossilized remains have been found in Spain.
That species died out about 800,000 years ago."

"Homo antecessor" were not "human beings".
They are thought to have possibly been our ancient ancestors in Europe similar, possibly related to, "homo erectus", "homo egaster" and/or "homo heidelbergensis".
Antecessor predates Neanderthals, and may-or-may-not be their, or our, direct ancestors.

These footprints add to Antecessor remains found at two sites in Spain, one in France and two others in England.
