COLUMBIA, Mo. — Michael Sam was the loud country boy who wore a tank top and a cowboy hat. He was the smooth-singing baritone who could irritate his coaches and crack up his teammates with his improvised songs.
He was one of the best players to come out of tiny Hitchcock, Tex., where his family was well known for all the wrong reasons. He was an all-American and defensive terror on the football field. He was a regular at the gay club where the bartenders knew him by name.
Sam introduced himself to the world Sunday night as an N.F.L. prospect who just happens to be gay. Now, he is poised to become a trailblazer in a violent and macho world that will scrutinize his every action and turn his private life into a very public debate. Related Coverage
But Sam has never had it easy. He grew up about 40 miles southeast of Houston near Galveston Bay in Texas, the seventh of eight children. Three of his siblings have died and two brothers are in prison. He lived briefly in the back seat of his mother’s car, and his relationship with his family remains complicated: when he visits home, he usually stays with friends.

But to get a sense of the challenges awaiting Sam, look no further than his father.
Last Tuesday, Michael Sam Sr. was at a Denny’s near his home outside Dallas to celebrate his birthday when his son sent him a text message.
Dad, I’m gay, he wrote.

It will not only be a death sentence to the team who drafts him as the vast majority of season ticket holders return their tickets in protest, but it will be the death nail of the entire NFL as each team that Sam’s team plays will have dozens of players who will refuse to suit up for that game and millions of fans across the nation will refuse to watch any game Sam plays in.

The homo is a “lose” proposition. If you put him on your team, you’ll never be able to get rid of him without involving lots of lawyer time. Obviously, he already has an attitude problem, coming-out like and when he did. FAIL.

Do you really believe any of that will happen? I will lay a bet that the number of season tickets turned in by the team that drafts him will be less than 1,000, and ratings will drop by less than 1% if at all.
Not saying it would be a good idea to draft him, but most people just don't care. The big problem for the team who drafts him is they are getting an undersized, old (24 year old) defensive lineman who is probably too slow to play LB in a 3-4 defense. And when they finally decide he isn't working out, they can't cut him because of the outcry that will come from the left. Kind of like the outcry that came from the right when a poor passing QB can't find a spot in the league.
I remember an interview with NFL great Bubba Smith. He was asked if there were gays in the NFL. He said “sure there were.” Asked how he knew they were gay, he said “they were the ones with a hard-on in the shower!”
His performance in the Senior Bowl and practices had dropped him from 2nd -3rd round to 4th - 6th round. This smacks of desperation to either move up in the draft or get paid reparations.

Is it really your opinion that only 1% of NFL fans will object to an open homosexual playing in the league?
Do you really think that only 1000 tickets will be retuned and that all the rest of the people will be fine with this gay playing on their favorite team?
the fruits in California all came here from Texas, Oklahoma, Minnesota and everywhere else.
And what if there is one big collective “who cares?” I know. Non stop reporting that he is the first openly gay NFL player. Obamamerica, all gay all the time.

Too bad there’s no more Houston Oilers. He’ll have to settle for the GB Packers, or maybe the St. Louis Rams. He will, however, enjoy his visits to see the NY Giants.
I got to thinking that if he goes undrafted, Goodell might be pressured to implement something akin to the “Rooney Rule”. A “Sam Rule” if you will. Every team will be forced to at least work out an openly gay prospect. I know, it’s crazy, but we live in crazy times.
