‘Historic’ storm ramping up as temperatures drop and precipitation increases (Atlanta)

The potentially devastating winter storm that forecasters and the governor have been warning about for days began unfolding before daybreak Wednesday as temperatures dropped to 32 degrees or below and began freezing the precipitation that returned overnight.

...

“All of the interstates, all of the secondary routes, all of the surface streets, are all iced over,” Arum said. “Where you are right now is where you’re going to be tomorrow morning, there’s no doubt about it.”

...

The number of power outages is growing by the minute. Just before 5 a.m., the number of customers in the dark was 2,000. That number climbed to 6,000 at 6 a.m. and 9,000 just 20 minutes later.

Repair crews made a little progress, whittling the number of outages down to 8,200 by 7 a.m., but by 7:30, the number had jumped again to more than 20,000.

One thing I got 2 weeks ago is a Mr. Heater Portable Buddy 9000BTU propane heater. I LOVE that thing. Heats my basement up where I’m at my computer pretty good. I have the extension hose that allows you to connect it to a 20 lb propane tank. Got it on Amazon for $85 free shipping....

While they say they're rated for indoor use, they are full of disclaimers saying not to use it inside your actual living space (good for garages, tool sheds, etc...). You really should have some good ventilation for that unit.

In an open basement, it’s not a problem. There is enough outside air infiltration (I have an insulated boat door) and it has an oxygen sensor and I also have a carbon monoxide detector. I also do not leave it alone unattended.

The Georgia Power outage map (link in post #21) now shows 59,000 customers without power in the state. And I got a call from my wife; that would include my house.

I refreshed the page. Now it’s up to 65,000 customers without power in Georgia.

Bummer! I hope it’s a big outage causing your power loss, so it goes up the priority chain.

BTW, did you take the pic in the replied-to post? Where is that on Peachtree? And what time taken?

I do hope Mayor Muhammed managed to stay away from Europe and Davos for this storm?

I have an electrical engineering degree and was a Class III (commercial and residential) licensed electrician for decades. Why would I need one?

I stayed at work last night so I walked outside and snapped that picture at a little after 7 this morning. You're looking at the intersection of Peachtree, West Paces Ferry and Roswell. It already looks drastically different.

Good to go, then. Stay safe!

To avoid a lawsuit your homeowner’s insurance won’t cover. I appreciate you may be very good at wiring,

Stay warm & safe, ya’ll!

They’re forecasting 6-10” of snow overnight for us (central MD). Grrrr.... I am so ready for spring I can hardly stand it!

Peachtree Road at rush hour this morning.

Isn't every street in Atlanta named "Peachtree Road"?

No wonder I didn’t recognize it. That’s one of those areas that when I do transit through it, I am paying lots of attention to the cars around me, and not sightseeing at all. For all the obvious reasons.
