The potentially devastating winter storm that forecasters and the governor have been warning about for days began unfolding before daybreak Wednesday as temperatures dropped to 32 degrees or below and began freezing the precipitation that returned overnight.

...

“All of the interstates, all of the secondary routes, all of the surface streets, are all iced over,” Arum said. “Where you are right now is where you’re going to be tomorrow morning, there’s no doubt about it.”

...

The number of power outages is growing by the minute. Just before 5 a.m., the number of customers in the dark was 2,000. That number climbed to 6,000 at 6 a.m. and 9,000 just 20 minutes later.

Repair crews made a little progress, whittling the number of outages down to 8,200 by 7 a.m., but by 7:30, the number had jumped again to more than 20,000.

Yes. That’s pretty much ground zero for Buckhead.

If you live here, you know that when he just said “Peachtree”, he meant THE Peachtree Road, and not North Peachtree Road, Peachtree Center Boulevard, Peachtree Industrial Boulevard, Peachtree Place, Peachtree-Dunwoody Road, Peachtree . . . . .

So far so good in Lilburn. A little ice and a little snow but power is on thank goodness. We are hoping to dodge the bullet.

just talked to one branch of my peeps in Roswell. They still have power but their fine base of a 1/4” of ice is now being fortified by a half inch of sleet. They hope it stays sleet and doesn’t add to tree buildup.

Hmmm.... might you, (or anyone ;) know why a good number of the North Ga. mountain counties are outside of the blue perimeter line on the outage map?

Thanks much for the link, and may God bless!
Y’all all keep warm!

It might be because they are outside of GA Power’s coverage area, and instead are served by local EMCs and Co-ops and such.

yes, my daughter and I are now looking at the latest area outage map: a few area (several thousand or hundred people in each triangled outage report) are east and south of 285: Brenham, Douglasville, Carrolton, etc.

Then many, many dozen reports outages directly south of 285!

Kennesaw area so far has kept power up.

Midtown has the DAR building collapse due to ice buildup on the roof: Haven’t heard of any other losses.

Hunker down, FRiend! What I do when this sort of thing happens is give the neighbors a visit and ask them if there’s anything they need. Then I button up, ready the alternate heat sources, charge the lanterns with kerosene, and open a good book. The less you have to go out, the better. Stay warm and inside and enjoy it. Best to you!

Hunker down, FRiend!

I'm hunkered. The problem is I'm at work with power, heat, hot water, cable, and high speed internet. My wife's at home with the kids, the dog, the fireplace and the dark.

She ain't too happy at the moment and I can't fix it. Sigh.

I’d joke about that but I happen to know she’s a major league FReeper and would probably kick my sorry butt up between my ears. Best to both of you and stay warm!
