Ted Cruz Just Made Life Miserable for Republican Leaders Once Again
theatlantic.com ^ | 2/12/14 | David Graham

Way back in early February, we heard that Ted Cruz had decided to start playing nice with his fellow Republicans.

What a difference 10 days make.

After Speaker John Boehner moved Tuesday to pass a "clean" debt-ceiling increase, relying on Democratic votes in the House, it looked like the increase could have an easy path through the Democratic-controlled Senate. Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew said the nation would hit the debt limit at the end of the month, and with Congress on recess until February 25, Wednesday's vote was almost do or die.

But the freshman senator from Texas had other ideas, as he often does. Instead of consenting to pass the increase with a bare majority, Cruz announced he'd filibuster, requiring a 60-vote threshold to invoke cloture on the measure. Perhaps sardonically, he told Politico he didn't think that would annoy his GOP colleagues.

You can see where this is going. When the cloture vote came up Wednesday afternoon in the Senate, Democrats voted for it en masse, but the measure still needed a few votes to pass. After a tense hour, and with the nation's full faith and credit on the line, it fell to Republican Senators Mitch McConnell and John Cornyn to, well, pick your cliché: swallow the bitter pill, take one for the team, walk the plank. Once it was clear there were enough Republican votes to invoke cloture, several of their GOP colleagues joined them and voted for cloture. The final vote was 67-31, not even close. A short time later, the Senate passed the increase 55-43, in a vote that required only a simple majority.

How long did it take for McConnell to step up?
Plus you left out the part where he was twisting the arms of other RINO’s.

Stockman doesn’t seem like a serious candidate to me, unfortunately. I may vote for him anyway.

Vote Stovall in the primary. All we have to do is keep Cornyn below 50%. Personally, I think Stockman is a losing bet for Senator. Too much dirt on him will come out on him during the race.

Doesn't really matter though. Anybody But Cornyn = ABC

Anyone voting to extend the debt limit without voting to slash the budget is a Treasonous Snake and not worthy of their office.

You’re exactly right. It’s imperative we keep Cornyn under 50% so we can take him out in the runoff. Cornyn is a snake who stabs conservatives in the back whenever he thinks he can get away with it.

It would be nice to know how far we have to go to obtain a reliable conservative majority.

One thing, though, is certain. We're getting closer...

The Republican Leadership in both houses have lost their way. One has to wonder if they are being personally blackmailed.

If they are being blackmailed, then they have done something worthy of being blackmailed.

Yet more reason for them to go...

Lamar Alexander will have his hands full with Joe Carr in Tennessee. Carr is a far superior legislator to Lamar, has written far more legislation and is leaps and bound more competitive.

He would be another Cruz or Lee. The founded a 10th Amendment caucus in Tennessee to weigh the merits of any legislation passed in the state to highlight any federal entanglements and attempt to eliminate them. He’s the real deal.

Thanks, Skink.... It’s a pleasure being in the trenches with you!

We’ve got our work cut out for us in the next 3 months.

I just dipped into the savings account pretty hard. I’ve never donated this much to any politician. They call me and mail me non-stop when I send $100. I’m a little worried Matt Bevin might just move into my spare bedroom!

I prefer to volunteer my time rather than my money...

But, in this case.. I think Bevin’s campaign needs every penny it can get. % wise? I think our donations have a MUCH greater potential to have an impact.
