Editorial: We recommend Bush in GOP race for land commissioner ("minimally experienced")

As Texas land commissioner, Jerry Patterson was a staunchly conservative, hard-charging powerhouse. We didn’t always agree with him, but he commanded respect. Too bad, now that he’s running for lieutenant governor, the GOP primary doesn’t boast a candidate of similar caliber. Voters must choose between the minimally experienced George P. Bush and his tea party opponent, David Watts. In this race, Bush is the better choice.

The 37-year-old energy consultant no doubt benefits from his family’s political dynasty. But Bush told us that, while he respects his family, his persuasiveness on the campaign trail is what will sway voters toward him.

Although his answers sometimes reflect a lack of depth, we like others, such as his ideas for bringing in third-party auditors to ensure that the General Land Office is running as efficiently as it can, especially in regard to the administration of Veterans Land Board programs.

The job would stretch Bush’s management background. The General Land Office has 620 staffers, oversees veterans housing and manages millions of acres of state holdings.
