The Boy Scouts of America experienced a modest dip in membership in 2013, but not the mass exodus that some social conservatives predicted while it was considering changing its membership policy on gays.
Boy Scouts membership fell by 6 percent last year, leaving it with nearly 2.5 million youth members and 960,000 adult members.
Reasons for the attrition, which is slightly greater than the 4 percent losses in 2012 and similar-sized declines in several previous years, are not fully understood but are likely related to the divisive vote on admitting openly gay youths to Scouts as well as a 60 percent increase in annual membership dues.

I think 6 percent does not tell the whole tale. but 2014 and a full year will.
I pulled my boys after never getting a response to my concern letter.
In five years they will be admitting boy-loving adult leaders, then you’ll see an exodus.
My son wouldn’t be in it. I wouldn’t give a nickel to the BS. Liberals have infected 3 major institutions that Americans love and respect, and all at the same time. Marriage, Military and the BS. All by design.
Organized youth sports are down considerably too.
Time for a schism.
The boys who are in the program will see it through but that six percent drop is likely composed primarily of a drop in new memberships. That’s because parents like me are not going to send their boys camping with homosexuals anymore than we’d send our daughters to go camping with boys and men.
They have already infiltrated and embedded themselves. How do you think the BSA came to conclusion to allow gay scouts?
I never expected a mass exodus.
I did expect a moderate exodus but, more significantly, I believe there will be a continuing decline in new membership.
Yep. Wait till we see stats for 2014. This policy didn’t take effect till January 1, 2014. I know two Scout leaders locally who resigned effective January 1. My youngest son had his Eagle Scout Board of Review in December and they asked him how he would be participating in the coming year. He told them in no uncertain terms that he would not longer be active in the Scouts effective January 1 and that this is the reason why.
Ain’t gonna be five years. I predict it will be in 2014, maybe 2015. Some 18 year old Eagle Scout will start whining about how he’s oppressed because he broke his oath for years and now can’t be a leader. It’s easy to cave again after the first time.
Good on your son. Mine earned Eagle in December but wasn’t asked. One of the Council guys knew that our entire troop was departing in January for Trail Life and seems to be in favor of us doing so. I suspect he either clued the other guy in or guided the conversation.
I think he asked to be on the Board of Review for just that reason.
Isn’t it interesting how quickly they try to manipulate reality? I’d say a 6% loss before it was even policy does not bode well for the lavender mafia.
And lets not forget replacement scouts when the current ones age out. I doubt there will be parents flocking to sacrifice their kids.
If people really love and care for their boys they would remove them. It should have been 100%. There is nothing so vile as normalizing irrational vile behaviors in little boys which “explaining” homosexuality to boys does in this setting.
It is pure warpage of how boys look at their bodies and others-—destroying the possibility of Christian Ethics which creates Rationality and Virtue.
They are forcing little boys to be irrational and throw out Truth and to be moral relativists (atheists/pagans/Satanists).
1 adult for every 2.5 boys??
There are a lot of registered volunteers who don’t do much of anything. Lot’s of merit badge counselors who must be registered.
Too many BSA troops are also leader heavy. It’s become a good ole boys club of who has the most volunteer patches on their uniforms.
BSA has an advanced leadership school called Wood Badge. I refused to participate because it’s become a secret handshake club and very cliquish.

While I’m sure that some families might have pulled their sons, it probably reflects a lack of new boys joining in sufficient number to replace those leaving. I would think any boys that have been in Boy Scouts form more than a year are probably committed to staying in. I would think that 6 percent is a healthy chunk of whatever percent leave Scouting in a typical year. Perhaps half?
